  The Asian I (cont'd...)
by Pauline Nguyen, Staff Writer

The Asian American I.
The camera, like the human eye, can play tricks on the human mind. Asian Americans do not welcome the comparison to these onscreen characters. The persona of the Asian seductress parallels the stereotype of the dumb blonde. When a smart blonde woman is confronted with the fact that her image is confined to dumb blonde jokes, she tries to defy these images. She has to work harder to escape from the idea that she is not smart enough to climb the corporate ladder without sleeping with the boss or using her sex appeal to her advantage. For Asian American woman, they feel boxed in by the expectations to be the seductress. In A Magazine's 2001 sex survey, a Chinese female said that she had to resort to online dating services to weed out all the men who were expecting a subservient female. What do these expectations mean for the Asian American I? With more interracial relationships forming, especially with white men, these women have to confront their mate's intention. Does this man love her or does he love the idea of being with an Asian woman? Would that woman feel pressure to try to confirm to some of the seductress stereotypes to keep her lover?

There is little substance in Asian characters. Their characters almost have a requirement list: English, long black hair, eyes that always look averted, and a slim petite figure that would look good in thigh high slip Chinese chi pao.

The Asian American Eye.
I can play the role of the seductress. I can play with your attentions by averting my eyes and coyly suggest a fun-filled fantasy. I can play the role of the slave. I can clean your American house, I can be your Japanese wife, and I can be your Chinese cook. I can be any of those things if I only existed in film. But I, the Asian American I, exist outside the limited view of the male camera lens. I see myself through the Asian American eye, which is boundless in its possibilities for me. Through these eyes, I fulfill my fantasies.
