nyu debate :: team :: about us
The New York University Cross Examination Debate Team mission is to provide a superior opportunity for all students to compete and grow through the vehicle of debate. With a travel schedule that covers more than 10,000 miles and 12 states, the team aims for excellence at every level of competition with a focus on the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) National Championships, the Novice National Championships, and the JV Nationals Championship. We attain those goals by striving for effective discourse and debate. In previous seasons, NYU broke a record for consecutive regional tournament victories in the open division and became the first program to win the Cornell Russell D. Martin tournament in consecutive years. The team has also maintained an average GPA over 3.5 for five of the last six years.

Professor of Law Norman Dorsen explained, "Excellence goes far beyond intellectual quality and attainment and includes two additional factors that are absolutely necessary; diversity and heart. Heart is what it all rests on--reputation, quality, prestige, and success. It refers to judgment, morality, and higher goals and to the sense of community that comes with being united in a common pursuit." We fulfill Dorsenís objectives through our competitive endeavors, our community outreach and our campus service.
