Art, Archives and Activism: Martin Wong's Downtown Crossings

Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU
The Asian/Pacific/American Institute at New York University is proud to present the exhibition ¡§Art, Archives, and Activism: Martin Wong¡¦s Downtown Crossings¡¨ from March 6-December 18, 2009. From the mid ¡¦80s through the early ¡¦90s, artist Martin Wong and other downtown New York artists were affected by an intersection of major historic events spanning the AIDS epidemic, urban renewal and attacks on graffiti in the city, to Tiananmen Square abroad. The exhibition explores artists who crossed paths during this particular time, influencing and inspiring discussions, art works, and activism.

"Made In Vietnam" Photography by Phuong M. Do

Wine & cheese opening reception for photographer and Steinhardt alumna Phuong M. Do¡¦s intriguing and culturally-rich photographic essay documenting Vietnam¡¦s nocturnal scenery. Commercial and residential architecture, city landscapes, and everyday street life function as subjects to a collection of lacquered images that evocatively capture the dynamic vibrancy of Vietnam¡¦s urban spaces.

Philippine Cultural Night Liwanag Sa Dilim: A Light in the Dark

From the outside, AJ and Julia have seemingly perfect lives in sunny Southern California. AJ, a high school senior, finds life and love come fast as he copes with his parents' divorce. Julia, AJ's live-in-cousin, learns traveling 7,000 miles for college may not have been far enough to escape her demons.This is a story of what tears people apart, and what it takes to bring them back together.

Feed 5000!

Agape Week Planning Committee
At Feed 5000, the Agape Week Committee will be working with World Vision, a non-profit organization aimed at fighting poverty, to encourage NYU students in sharing love with their community and interacting with the homeless. They will have a chance to prepare bagged lunches, go out into New York City in groups, and form relationships with the homeless over a meal.

Asian Cultural Expressions 26: New Wave

The Hypersexuality of Race: Performing Asian/American Women on Screen and Scene ¡X A book talk with Celine Parrenas Shimizu

In The Hypersexuality of Race, Celine Parre?as Shimizu urges a shift in thinking about sexualized depictions of Asian/American women in film, video, and theatrical productions. Shimizu advocates moving beyond denunciations of sexualized representations of Asian/American women as necessarily demeaning or negative and argues for a more nuanced approach to the mysterious mix of pleasure, pain, and power in performances of race and sexuality.
