PHILANTHROPY

Sharsheret: Sharsheret, Hebrew for "chain," was founded in 2001 by Rochelle Shoretz, a former law clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Kappa), who recognized the need for a breast cancer organization that would provide culturally-sensitive support for Jewish women after her own diagnosis at age 28

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation: Elizabeth Glaser, an AEPhi alumna, contracted the HIV virus from a blood transfusion in the mid 1980s, which she unknowingly passed to her two children. After her daughter's death in 1988, Glaser and two friends founded an organization for pediatric AIDS Research, which was given Glaser's name after her death in 1994. Since the Foundation's conception, pediatric AIDS in the U.S. has seen a dramatic decrease.

Around NYU: In addition to activities which help support our national philanthropies (Egg Beg, Penny Wars) our chapter is involved in various projects around the NYU area. In the spring we co-sponser the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life at Coles Sports Center and we enjoy helping out at the Hebrew Union College's soup kitchen on a weekly basis .
