Introduction
Quotations enable you to choose a striking passage to illuminate a whole
work and your understanding of its shape and meaning.
Choose carefully! Quotations are memorable: they'll come back in recollection
when you least expect them!
Quizzes and part of the final exam will be based on some of the spot
quotations you post for the class with your comments and responses.
Instructions
Each student will post at least one quotation + comment and one response
during the semester.
This is a graded assignment, 250 words maximum for comments and responses.
Compose your work carefully before posting it: comment specifically on
the evidence in the passage chosen; use spell check and word count; add
a title that points to your conclusion.
Quotations & Comments
Choose a quotation which you think points to an important aspect of the
whole work. Comment on its form, context, and general significance:
- Form: verse or prose? story or direct speech? what words are
particularly significant?
- Context: What is the role of the passage in the place where
it occurs in the work?
- Significance: What does this quotation show about the themes
or purpose of the work as a whole? To what other key passages can it
be related?
Responses
You may respond to the comments or to the quotation itself. Professor
Regalado will respond online to all postings. She will hold "virtual office
hours" on our Blackboard Chatroom from 7-9 PM on the eve of each quiz
and the final.
