What's New?I co-authored an article with Guy Scalzi in the May-June 2008 issue of Physician Executive called Effective Project Management Improves the Chances of IT Project Success. I wrote a chapter on Information Management for the new 9th Edition of Health Care Delivery in the United States, edited by Anthony Kovner and James Knickman. Like my course at NYU, it focused on the use of information technology to improve both service quality and clinical quality. To download a PDF copy, click this link> Information Management
My book was published by Health Forum/AHA Press. My co-author is Guy Scalzi and the title is Making Information Technology Work: Maximizing the Benefits for Health Care Organizations. It's a book for senior executives, managers and clinicians that covers the “before, during and after” stages of a health care information technology (IT) project and provides guidance on how projects can be successfully managed. Making Information Technology Work shows readers how to assess IT project value before approval, monitor whether projects are on-time and on-budget, and measure performance after implementation. Case studies and effective project management tools and techniques help readers maximize project benefits.
I teach a course for the Network for Healthcare Management and the University of Colorado at Denver called Health Care Management Information Systems and revise it every Spring. Many of the readings are available on-line. Click on Continuing Education to see the syllabus. I co-authored an article with Gregg Mohrmann on IT Management and Governance Systems and Their Emergence in Healthcare that was published in the Winter 2007 issue of the Journal of Healthcare Information Management.
