How does student financial aid work? How is "ability to pay" measured and resulting "need" met? What are the major aid programs and how do students/parents apply (delivery system) and for what? Do scholarship search firms help? Private sources? Aid packaging philosophies? Consequence of defaults (for students, schools, etc.). Loan forgiveness programs. "Back end" financing.

What role do states (particularly New York) play in higher education financing?


Class 4

How is higher education really financed in the U.S.? How is it decided who pays what? What is the "Benefits Theory" and how does it underpin higher education finance? What is the scope of our "industry"? Sources of funding?


Class 5

How is higher education financed at private schools vs. public schools? How are international students financed? How are "for profits" different? What is "e-learning" and what effects will it have on our future finances?


Class 6

How do other countries finance higher education?

Paper/Project topic "proposal" due.


Class 7

Doing budgets from the department level up. How to finance your programs and special projects.


Class 8

What is the real business side of higher education finance? What role does "enrollment management" play, and how can financial aid be used to influence enrollments and quality? Trends in recruitment, retention, and enrollment services.


Class 9

How can we "develop" more funding for our school? What are the roles of the University Development Office?


Class 10

How do the university and its departments develop and manage budgets? How does this fit into the overall picture? What is the NYU story?


Class 11

What other roles do budgets play? How should we read higher education financial statements? Is our school financially healthy? What about the "ratios"?


Class 12

What is the role of private foundations? The Ford Foundation?

What federal changes are coming?


Class 14

What are the politics of higher education finance? What else can we expect from Washington, D.C.? From Albany? From our city? How do we use the school's "government relations" professional(s) to improve our finances?
