Caesar reached its peak of popularity in the US between 1871 and 1891. On Christmas Day, 1871, Edwin Booth (John Wilks’ brother) launched the first "long run" of Caesar in what stretched into eighty-five consecutive performances at Booth's Theatre. He then toured the production extensively. This production was mounted just six years after Lincoln's death (April 15, 1865.) Many theatre patrons were enraged by the fact that Edwin Booth would produce this play so shortly after his brother murdered the President. Due to the outrage surrounding Booth's production, Caesar gained immediate popularity in the United States.
