The New Victory Theatre

209 West 42nd Street

Though it is considered by most to be Off-Broadway, this theatre is included because it does occupy a space in the Broadway theatre district. It was built in 1900 by Oscar Hammerstein and enjoyed a run as a burlesque house in 1931. During World War II, it became a movie theater and even later it was a XXX-rated movie house. In 1990 it was acquired by the 42nd Street project which then performed a $7.5 million comprehensive renovation project to redesign it specifically for young people. In 1995, it became the first theater opened under the auspices of the New 42nd Street redevelopment project and is now home to the first year-round theatre for kids and their families.
