Welcome to our site devoted to Broadway theater houses. After all, everything needs a home even Broadway shows. If these magnificent venues did not exist, where would these plays have to go?
Here is a very brief background of the arrangement of the buildings in the Broadway theater district: In 1900, 16 theatres' doors opened directly onto Broadway. In 1950, only 3 remained. From 1974 to the present, only 2 are left, The Winter Garden and The Broadway. All other legitimate theatres are on side streets, but they are still known as Broadway theaters, "for it is not in the nature of the theater to be literal" (quote from Brooks Atkinson, legendary theater critic). Also, in 1972 the Shubert organization owned 15 of the 36 Broadway theater houses. Today, by my count, they own 16 of 37. 7 belong to the Nederlanders, 3 or 4 are Jujamcyn-owned, and 1 is a Disney venture. The rest are owned by miscellaneous corporations.
On the pages for the individual theatres, you will find some play titles highlighted in pink. This denotes that these are works we know of that include gay/lesbian content. So to get to the theatre pages, just click on a theatre on the map below. (Incidentally, most of the pages on this site are best viewed with your browser window opened as large as possible.) Enjoy!!
