The Age of...

The period in England from the late 1400s to the early 1600s is known by a variety of names.  Here is a brief list of terms and their definitions:

Age of Exploration:

Describes the abundance  of geographical findings and growth of trade and commerce. In 1497, John Cabot (an Italian-born explorer sailing for an English company) arrived at Newfoundland and may have reached America, laying the foundation for English claims to America

Age of Discovery:

Describes the array of scientific discoveries, including:  Circulation of blood and valves in veins, invention of telescope, decimal fractions, laws of planetary motion

Elizabethan Era:

Named after Queen Elizabeth, who was in power at the heighth of the Renaissance.  It is argued that her leadership further propelled the growth and expansion that occurred in England.

Renaissance:

Means "rebirth"

Describes explosion of art, scholarship, and literature

Reformation:

Religious establishment of the Protestant Church of England.

Began when King Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church and the authority of the Pope.
