Though the world
of Drag performance is ancient and well marked by famous queens such
as Divine
and RuPaul, the art of trasvestite
theatrics is rooted heavily in drag troupes. Finding kinship and greater
power in numbers is clear throughout mass media views of drag performance.
In Priscilla Queen of the Desert, 3 female impersonators travel
around Australia in a bus spreading their kitsch with passion. In To
Wong Foo Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swaze and John Leguizamo create
a sisterhood that transforms a small town with passion for life. But
the experts in drag theatrics are not movie stars, but rather intellectual
playwrights and opera singers... who happen to look great in heels.
This purpose of
this site is to make available information on the artists, works, and
social impact of transvestite theater companies... if only a small portion
of it. I have focused on 5 such companies: The Ridiculous Theatrical
Company, Split Britches, Hot Peaches, Bloolips, and La Gran Scena Opera.
