Gays in the Media

Harvey Fierstein wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed Broadway smash hit Torch Song Trilogy for which he won two Tony Awards and two Drama Dest Awards (for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play). Torch Song Trilogy also garnered an Obie Award and a Dramatist Guild Award and was nominated for the Olivier. He later starred in the film adaptation, co-starring Anne Bancroft and Matthew Broderick. The year following his Torch Song victory Fierstein won his third Tony for the book of the musical La Cage Aux Folles. After enjoying roles in such Hollywood successes as Independence Day, Mrs. Doubtfire, Bullets Over Broadway, and Mulan, Harvey Fierstein took on quite possibly the role of his career, that of Edna Turnblad in Broadway's hit musical Hairspray. Mr. Fierstein is currently developing a new show for prime time tv in which he will play the mother of a sitcom family.
