Ellen DeGeneres was named funniest person in America in 1982, starred in two television shows (Ellen and The Ellen Show). In 1997 her character Ellen Morgan became the first openly gay television character in history. She has a book of short stories and essays coming out (no pun intended) this fall. She is currently touring the country performing stand-up comedy.
