ARRANGING AS COMPOSING: COMPOSING FOR ORCHESTRA
© Copyright 1997-2009 John V. Gilbert All Rights Reserved
In the piece below ("Night Song"), the orchestra has been used to create a range of expression from anticipation, to reflection, to expansion, to humor, with a slight dose of uncertainty before the final section. MIDI has been used as a sketchpad for the orchestra so that the instrumental writing is written for the instruments directly and the MIDI set-up of nine instruments provides the sound of the instruments as the composition is written ("feedback on note insert").

The composition transforms the melodic materials into fragments and builds a secondary motive from the melodic fragments.
