June 18th, 2001 Connection:
New York and Indiana

On Monday morning, June 18, 2001, a third collaborative I2 experiment between New York University and Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis took place. John Gilbert has provided his debriefing of the event which also includes ideas gleaned in discussion with others and comments made during the Q & A session.

The first experiment took place a year ago at the 10th Annual Music Technology Workshop at IUPUI featuring Celina Charlier from NYU in a performance of a contemporary recorder piece with extended techniques. The quality of the connection was outstanding.

The second experiment (Cassandra I2) featured collaboration of instrumentalists under the direction of Dinu Ghezzo at NYU with the renowned percussionist Jack Gilfoy at IUPUI. The picture and sound quality was very good, but there were problems of latency and feedback that needed to be resolved. This experiment was coordinated with the Toronto Music 2000 International Music Conference, where Dr. Fred Rees and Dr. John Gilbert presented their work in distance education and distance collaboartion.

This third experiment has had considerable more texting taking place and trouble-shooting and resolving feed back and synchronization problems. Communication has been through a listerv providing a record of exchanges among the participants. The connection between New York and Indiana represents video conferencing technology, point to point. The internet has been a difficult medium for synchronous events because of bandwidth and latency problems, but interesting and productive encounters have taken place using CUSeeMe and iVisit to connect composers, performers and educators. Possibilities introduced by broadband high speed connections challenge our creative and educational mindsets and open the way to extending the interactive creative process.
