Music and Performing Arts Professions

Minutes of the Committee for Curriculum and Programs

April, 2004

The curriculum committee was established by faculty action and membership for the first configuration was through voluntary pareticipation, working to develop a committee drawn from a number of programs in the department. Volunteering to participate were the following faculty members:

Barbara Bashaw, Dance Education

Dinu Ghezzo, Music Composition

John Gilbert, Music Education

Panos Mavromatis, Music Theory

Nancy Smithner, Educational Theatre

Brann Wry, Arts Administration

The Spring meeting consisted of organizational planning. John  Gilbert was selected to serve as the Chair of the Committee. The School course proposal form was adapted for departmental use and added the signature of the Chair of the Curriculum Committee as a formal element of the form.

It was also decided by the committee that the Chair of the committee would serve for a term of three years. Regular committee members would serve for gtwo years, except for this first year,  in which some members would serve for three years, in order to establish staggered appointments to insure continuity.

It was decided that much of the work of the committee could be conducted on a curriculum website where faculty could post new courses and curricula for review by faculty and students. Comments would be sent by e-mail to the committee and the faculty member proposin g the new course or curriculum. The website would not be officially linked, but would be made available to faculty and selected students.

The MPAP Curriculum Committee would convene once a month at 11 a.m. (as needed) on the same day as the departmental faculty meeting .

Academic Year 2004-2005

The committee formally declared its name to be the Committee on Curriculum and Programs (CCP) for Music and Performing Arts Professions. This mirrors the name of the school-wide committee. Departments now control issues of content and pedagogy. The School-wide CCP examines courses for overlap with our courses and programs in the school. During the Fall new courses werre approved for Educational Theatre and Dance Education. Vocal Performance also presented new curricula tracks for graduate studies in vocal studies. The department also developed a new course (E78) that is projects centered: Collaborative Projects in the Performing Arts, which was taught as a pilot course in the Spring.  Because of medical considerations, Dinu Ghezzo resigned as a member of the committee. David Elliott volunteered as a replacement for Professor Ghezzo.

In the Spring, Music Education received departmental approval for E85.1031 Creative Performance Opportunities in Music Education. The course was also taught on a pilot course basis for the first time in the Spring. The course will now be forwarded to the School CCP for formal registration.

An appeal went ourt from the Committee to the Faculty seeking representation  from music performance programs. As a result, the MPAP CCP welcomes new members from music performance: Stephanie Baer (Instrumental Studies) and Bill Wesbrooks, (Vocal Studies), each for a three-year appointment.

Discussion was made about rotating the Chair  from within the existing membership, and  getting replacements as members complete their terms of service. Appointments have been set up to allow overlap for creating continuity over the years.  During the summer, Dr. Gilbert will create a document concernbing membership and representation on the committee that will be reviewed by the committee in the Fall.

An expanded committee will conduct the curriculum review for Courses and Programs. In the Fall, 2005, the committee membership will be as listed below.
