Jeff Ridenour: Dido influenced briefly by the Barbary Pirates, even

- The title of the piece is "Dido influenced briefly by the Barbary Pirates, even" and the timing will be 5'32", +/- 17"
- The piece deals with the theme of hegemony, and the various ways that one agent/group/culture can influence another located far away. It draws material from three "historical" events: 1) the mythic story of Aeneas' affair and subsequent abandonment of Dido, queen of Carthage, 2) The conflict in the early 19th century between the United States and the North African states of the Barbary Coast, and 3) 21st century terrorist acts against naval vessels (such as the bombing in Yemen of the USS Cole). In addition, the piece is also influenced by two artworks, Henry Purcell's opera, "Dido and Aeneas", and Marcel Duchamp's "Large Glass".
- I will be sending parts to several of the musicians in New York, and if there are dancers there that would like to participate, they would be most welcome. The New York side will be primarily representing, among other things, the Pirates.
- As perscribed in the score, parts and directions will be sent to players in NYU via fax. If someone could send me a fax number that I can transmit the materials to, I would appreciate it.
- I also intend to have 3 texts read as part of the piece, although these are still yet to be finalized.
