| For
the exam, you must provide the artist’s name (if known),
title of the work, medium, date, location made for (or in), region,
and style-period (i.e., Hiberno-Saxon; Migration Period –
Visigothic). Your answers should address the main features
of style, iconography, structural innovations (for architecture),
patronage, function, and religious, historical, political, cultural
and social context, as relevant. Answers should address both what
is typical about the monument, and what is noteworthy. For architecture,
know the plan and all major views and/or reconstructions.

In
addition, think about the following broad essay topics as you prepare
for the exam:
-early
Christian and early medieval manuscripts: books for the illiterate,
and/or books for the literate?
-text and image in early medieval art
-monasteries and monasticism in early medieval Europe: forms
and artistic production
-the image of the Carolingian ruler
-early Christian and Byzantine influences on early medieval
art: style, iconography, architectural form
- style as a cultural or political choice in early medieval
