This building's Roman temple front echoes, in more elaborate terms, the facade of Federal Hall. Its monumental form is meant to aggrandize and authenticate the role of commerce in New York. However, this applied temple facade is in reality little more than a fantasy, a stage set for the enactment of commercial exchange activities that take place inside.
