Garages at 75th and 77th Street
Amsterdam Avenue at 75th and 77th Streets, C. Abbott French and Company [1890]

These Round Arch style utilitarian buildings functioned as stables for the New York Cab Company and for West Side homes. These structures are representative of the character Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues in the late 19th century when it was a low-rent district occupied by working-class tenements and commercial buildings. Following a wave of gentrification in the 1980s, the area around Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues became the upscale commercial and residential district that it is today.
