There is very little need to use Matlab to understand or do the exercises in Chapter 1. In preparation for using Matlab for the later chapters, however, it is useful to spend some time using Matlab for these simple exercises, just to get the feel of it. You need to learn to enter matrices ready for use by Matlab, and to multiply matrices once they are entered.
The exercises of Chapter 1 can be worked through using Matlab.
