Class 1 (January 22/23)

Introduction to class, Questionnaire, Grade Policies, Discussion, Scanning, Screenings

Assignment 1 - Due January 29/30

1) Get 3 ring binder and bring it to every class

2) - Get text book, Director 8 Demystified, and begin reading/doing first four chapters (see assignment 5 below)

3) - Submit initial project idea (on paper, printed)

4) Send me at least one email before next class - how are you are doing, any other concerns, etc.

Due in two weeks, February 5/6:

5) - Submit an interactive project representative of your work (create one if necessary, students that are new to Director may use assignment 5 instead of this one)

6) - In "Director 8 Demystified" read/do : Introduction, Chapter 1 "Guided Tour", Caper 2 "Elelments of Animation", Chapter 3 "Making it Multimedia", Chapter 4 "Introducing Interactivity" - ignore section on creating a projector (No projectors until the end of the semester) - Due in two weeks, one small project demonstrating elements in these chapters - workshop after class 2 next week outside of class time for extra help.

 

Class 2 (January 29/30)

3:30 - Workshop - Discuss initial project ideas as a group and individually, Demos

6:30 - More Demos and initial look at Photoshop

Assignment 2 - Due February 5/6

1) - Submit final project idea, version two (on paper). Include story, media/applications to be used, type of collaboration you may be able to give and the type of collaboration needed

2) - Hand in three manipulated images handed in (on instructor’s computer) - note what you did (on paper, what filter(s), selection techniques, etc.) - be prepared to discuss techniques used. A few sites on the web may be of some help. For basic help, go to Photoshop Crash Course. For a little more advanced help, go to Apple - Creative - Photoshop Tips. Search web for other sites for help - there are many

Class 3 (February 5/6) - Last class for new students

3:30 - Workshop - individual work on finishing assignment for today

6:30 - The flow chart. Screen images. Further in to Photoshop

8:00 - Makeup session

Assignment 3 - Due February 12/13

1) Read Chapter 10, turn in Flow Chart (on paper) of final project (use examples on pages 320 & 321) - as begun in class

2) Begin wireframe

3) Join DigitalMedia forum

4) Work with Photoshop and Director as applicable to your project

 

Class 4 (February 12/13)

3:30 - Workshop

6:30 - The wireframe, from flow chart to screen. Further in to Director Demonstration of good navigational design - Flow charts and wireframes of final project explained and assigned. Screen and work selected wireframes, and individual meetings as time allows

Assignment 4 - Due February 19/20

1 - Complete wireframe in Director (skeleton, outline) of final project - (navigational only, should be functional, and no aesthetic consideration). This should mirror the flowchart. Begin gathering project elements and work on overall look and feel - however media should be inserted in Director only after the wireframe is solid

2 - Read Beginning, Middle, and End - Not Necessarily In That Order by William Homer Hilf. This article on digital interactivity can also be found at http://www.cybertown.com/hilf.html

3 - Email instructor collaboration needs and possible offerings as soon as possible

 

Class 5 (February 19/20)

3:30 - Workshop on wireframe

6:30 - Workshop - User testing of wireframes

Assignment 5 - Due February 26/27

1 - Read Chapters 7 and 8 in the Director text ("More Production Tools" and "The Anatomy of Lingo") at a computer and experiment/play with the features of Director introduced

2 - Begin/continue fleshing out the wireframe of your project - keep in mind one what will be on the class web page as a trailer of the project

 

Class 6 (February 26/27)

3:30 - General workshop/lab and individual meetings (review and catch up)

6:30 - User testing of wireframes, Sound - all aspects concerning projects, capturing, modifying, uses of.

Assignment 6 - Due March 5/6

1 - Continue gathering media elements and fleshing out wireframe

2 - Post collaboration needs/offerings on "digitalmedia" class forum (writing, imaging, sound, lingo, video, design, general Director, etc.). Make sure you include both what you need from someone for your project, and what you can help someone with. Extra credit will be given if you collaborate with more than one person

 

Class 7 (March 5/6)

3:30 - General workshop/lab - More basic Director techniques, hands on - rollovers, puppetsprites, pushbuttons, review Director movie linking.

6:30 - Video - all aspects concerning projects, capturing, modifying, formats, compression schemes, file size, etc. Tech session on video digitizing with Final Cut Pro from VHS, Beta, and DV formats by Dave Spector.

Assignment 7 - Due March 19/20

1 - Continue project - gathering material, placing it into wireframe (this assignment remains constant)

2 - email instructor set collaborations (who and what)

2 - Hand project in as is next class on CD

 

Spring Recess

 

Class 8 (March 19/20)

Review of Sound and digital/Quicktime™ video use (in Director, web, and other) as needed. General workshop/lab on project and shockwave web trailer (shockwave may be covered next week instead of today), project as is due today on CD.

Assignment 8 - Due March 26/27

1 - Continue project

2 - Report collaborations (who and what) via email as assigned two weeks ago. Remember, collaborators do not have to be in this section of class, nor in "New Media"

 

Class 9 (March 26/27)

Workshop on web trailer and project today, one - one meetings

Assignment 9 - Due April 2/3

1 - Continue project - progress so far due next week (handed in on CD)

2 - Begin web trailer (separate, shorter version of project in Shockwave format)

(extra sessions will be set up as needed in the coming weeks)

 

Class 10 (April 2/3)

Review format of project - workshop on project, individual help on projects and trailers as needed during one - one meetings

CD of final project version 1 of 2 (work to date) due today. The CD handed in today must contain:

1) A projector - 2) All essential files such as Quicktime movies, external sounds, and all other files required by the projector - 3) All Director movies

Assignment 10 - Due April 9/10

2 - Web trailer (Shockwave, Quicktime, Flash)

 

Class 11 (April 9/10)

Workshop, web trailer due today and individual notes
