Solution

Registering your Computer for ResNet and NYU-NET Access

A. Introduction
This quick reference is meant to serve as a step-by-step quick-reference guide to the new NYU-NET computer registration process that enables you to access ResNet and NYU-NET, NYU's campus-wide computer network. You are allowed to register up to two computers for ResNet access. The URL for NYU-NET computer registration has changed from http://resnet.nyu.edu/ to http://computer.registration.nyu.edu/.

B. Instructions
For the most detailed and up-to-date instructions, be sure to check http://www.nyu.edu/its/resnet/ or refer to the ITS Guide to Telephone Services and ResNet to configure your computer and prepare it to register for ResNet. You cannot complete the registration process until you have completed the configuration steps.

  1. With your Ethernet cable plugged in and your computer turned on, open a web browser and go to http://computer.registration.nyu.edu/. You should see the login screen for the NYU-NET computer registration process.
  2. Type in your activated NetID and password, then click the Sign In button. If you have not yet activated your NetID, follow the link that says Need to activate your NetID or NYUHome account? to visit http://start.nyu.edu/. Follow the instructions to activate your NetID, then return to http://computer.registration.nyu.edu, enter your NetID and password, and click the Sign In button. You should now see the User Agreement screen.
  3. Read the User Agreement carefully, then click the I Agree button at the bottom of the agreement. Please note: You are required to abide by the agreement even if you have not read it.
  4. You should now see the Registration screen, with your computer's information automatically filled in. In the Description field, enter a description of your computer (such as "My Dell Computer" or "My Macbook"). Use the pull-down menu to chose your Computer Type, then click the Confirm button.
  5. You should now see a screen confirming that the registration of your computer is complete. Wait five minutes, reboot, and you should now be able to connect to ResNet.
  6. Run Windows Update or Macintosh Software Update to install any crucial operating system patches that may be available. Instructions for updating your system software can be found in the ITS Guide to Telephone Services and ResNet.
  7. Visit http://software.nyu.edu/ or the Ask ITS area of NYUHome(http://home.nyu.edu/) to download and install Symantec AntiVirus and Lavasoft Ad-Aware, as well as read important security and policy alerts.
  8. To register a second computer, click Register on the lefthand navigation.
  9. To de-register a previously registered computer, click De-Register on the lefthand navigation menu. In the list that appears, find the computer you want to de-register, then click the de-register button next to it.
  10. To view a list of computers you have registered, click View in the lefthand navigation menu.
  11. If you need help with any part of the registration process, click Help in the lefthand navigation menu to view frequently asked questions. If you still have questions about registering for NYU-NET or using any of our services, contact the Client Services Center by sending email to AskITS@nyu.edu, calling 1-212-998-3333 (83333 from your room or any other NYU location), or using the Ask ITS support area in NYUHome (http://home.nyu.edu/). Once you have established an NYU-NET connection, we also encourage you to browse our extensive FAQs at http://www.nyu.edu/its/faq/.
