Blackboard is a Learning Management System. It is a web-based software system that allows users to post course content, communicate with students, set up quizzes or surveys, and manage grades online without any knowledge of HTML or programming. Blackboard has been in use at NYU since 2003.
A Blackboard course site, in which you are enrolled as an instructor, TA, course builder, or student, can be accessed in via NYU Home:
NYU Home - go to http://home.nyu.edu and log in using your Net ID and password. Once in NYU Home, click on the Academics Tab near the top right hand corner of your screen.
Tip: |
At the top of the Academics page, you will see the Blackboard Classes Channel. There are 4 main areas of the Blackboard Classes Channel as follows:

1. Current, Past, Other & Favorites Tab
- Current Tab - shows you the courses you are enrolled in for Fall or Spring Semesters.
- Past Tab - shows past courses (i.e. not current or upcoming semesters) you are enrolled in.
- Other Tab - shows any non-academic or organizational sites you are enrolled in, and lastly
- Favorites Tab - shows preferred course short-list. To add a course to your favorites tab, click on the heart icon to the right of a course link.
By default the Current is the opening tab when you go to the channel. You can amend this by clicking on the + icon in the top right hand corner of the channel, clicking on the Edit option, making your choice from the drop-down menu, and clicking Save to save your changes.
Tip: Have you requested a course site? A Blackboard course site must be requested for each course site per semester. You can request your course site by clicking on the Request a course site for this semester link in the top right hand corner of section 1 of the Blackboard Classes Channel. Section 2 of this tutorial explains the course request process in detail. |
2. News & Alerts
The News & Alerts area of the Blackboard Classes Channel will display the latest information from the Blackboard blog. More information can be found on these items by clicking on the More Blackboard News & Alerts link in the bottom right hand corner of section 2.
3. Help & Support
You can search the Ask ITS Knowledgebase directly from the Blackboard Classes Channel. Also, in section 3 of the channel you can request Blackboard training etc.
4. Refresh Blackboard Courses List
As mentioned in our tip above, the Refresh Blackboard Courses List link is used to display newly activated Blackboard course sites.
