Blackboard 8: Reusing Content

How do I reuse the content from an existing course?

Solution

A Blackboard course site must be requested for a course at the start of each semester. Requests for courses are completed via the Course Request Form (www.nyu.edu/its/blackboard/request/).

Course Copy

Instructors who teach the same course from semester to semester or year to year (and have requested a new course site for the upcoming semester) can copy their content from one course site to another.

Go to the control panel of your course site and click on the Course Copy link in the Course Options area.

Next, click on the Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course link.

In Section 1, choose the course you want to copy the content into by clicking on the Browse button (a list of courses in which you are enrolled as an instructor will appear).

In Section 2, place a check mark beside the specific content you wish to copy.

Finally, click Submit to save your changes and the request will be queued and an email confirmation will be sent once the request has been completed. This is normally quite quick depending on the time of the semester.

IMPORTANT

Do not place a check mark beside the Enrollments option as this will bring over students from one semester to another. Enrollments for the new course site will be added automatically in Blackboard.

Archive & Export Course

Other options for moving content from one course site to another are Export Course or Archive Course. Both options can be found in the Course Options area of your control panel.

Either link will bring you to the Export/Archive Manager. Click on either option as follows:

Export: this will save a copy of the content only.

Archive: this will save an exact copy of the course, both content and users, with optional Grade Center History.

Once you click Submit your request for an archive or export of your course will be queued and a confirmation email will be sent once the request has been completed.

In the Export/Archive Manager, you can right-click on the zip file name of your export or archive to save it to your local computer.

To use this content in a different course site you must use the Import Package tool. In the control panel of the course you want to add the content to, click on Import Package in the Course Options area.

In Section 2, click on the Browse button to locate the zip file of your export or archive on your local computer.

In Section 3, click on the various content you want to import to the course site.

Once you click Submit your request for an archive or export of your course will be queued and a confirmation email will be sent once the request has been completed.
