How do I use the Course Request Form?
SolutionA Blackboard course site must be requested for a course at the start of each semester. Requests for courses are completed via the Course Request Form (http://www.nyu.edu/its/blackboard/request/). For help using this form, click on the Need Help using this Form? link in the top right hand corner of any page of the form.
Tip:The Course Request Form can only be used to request an academic course site. To request a non-academic or organization course site you can use the NYU Blackboard Help Request form (http://www.nyu.edu/its/blackboard/bbhelpform.php) and choose Request non-academic course site from the Type of Help Required drop-down menu. |
The Course Request Form has various options, depending on the course site(s) you are requesting. Once you have select the course site(s) you want, you may see some or all of the following options:
1. Multi-section Set-up
If you are teaching multiple sections of the same course you can choose to have these sections combined into one single course site. Alternatively, you can choose to create one course site per each section.
2. Cross-listing
A cross-listed course is a course with multiple course IDs for the same course. If you are teaching a cross-listed course, you can choose have the student enrollments from the second course added to this course.
3. Additional Instructors
If you are co-teaching a course, you can add the additional instructors here. Alternatively, you can use the Add Users by Role tool in the control panel of your Blackboard course site to add them at a later stage.
4. Create Course
When you have made your changes, click Create Course.
The last page of the Course Request Form provides confirmation that you have requested a specific course site. You will receive an email confirmation also.
This page also provides useful answers to common questions such as:
- Student enrollments: once a Blackboard course site has been requested, the student enrollments will be activated for that course. Student enrollments at NYU are processed every 4 hours, i.e., 8am, 12pm, 4pm and 8pm. Depending on the time of day you request your course site, students will appear in your Blackboard course site. You can view these enrollments by using the List/Modify Users tool in the control panel of your Blackboard course site.
- Course availability: courses are created as unavailable to students by default. At the beginning of a semester you may make lots of changes to your Blackboard course site. If you are not ready for students to view a specific piece of content, then you can make that particular piece unavailable.
However, if you would prefer to make the entire course unavailable to students this can also be achieved. To make the entire course unavailable:
- Go into the Control Panel for the course and click the Settings link in the Course Options section.
- Click Course Availability and select No next to Make Course Available.
- Click Submit to save your changes.
Available/UnavailableIf you make a specific piece of content unavailable then students can still see the course in their Blackboard course listing and access the course, but will only see any available content. If you make the entire course unavailable it will not appear in the student's Blackboard course listing which can lead to some confusion at the beginning of semester. |
The final step in requesting a course site is being able to access same. If you are accessing Blackboard via NYU Home you must click on the Refresh Blackboard Courses List link at the bottom of the Blackboard Classes Channel. This will refresh your page and you should now see your course site.
