Partnering with the American Red Cross of Greater New York (ARCGNY), NYU's Center for Catastophe Preparedness and Response (CCPR) is now offering orientation and functional training sessions for NYC area volunteers (including NYU students) for deployment to areas devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Interested staff and students are encouraged to sign up online for the sessions, to be held Oct. 3 and Oct. 26 in NYU's Yalincak Lecture Hall. Further details follow.
Details:
- Sessions are open to NYU students (but will also include volunteers from the entire NYC region).
- NYU encourages students to volunteer for assignment during either the Winter or Spring breaks. The ARCGNY will ensure that student deployments are assigned accordingly.
- Minimum deployment is 10 days, Maximum is 3 weeks.
- Volunteers will be required to participate in an orientation and functional training (mass care/sheltering, family services, or logistics) process (approx. 11hrs, process described below) which can be started at any time during the semester.
- NYU sessions will be held in the Yalincak Lecture Hall, 19 West 4th St., Room 101
- ARC pays for all deployment related costs (transportation, housing, food, etc.)
Process:
- Orientation: Volunteers (and students) sign up for an ‘Orientation’ session (3 hrs) via the ARCGNY website: http://www.nyredcross.org/page.php/prmID/288
Orientation sessions are currently scheduled for: 10/3 and 10/26
- Functional Training: Volunteers then choose a functional specialty and attend a corresponding training session (4hrs)
- Interview: The ARC then conducts a post training interview at ARC headquarters (30 min)
- Assignment Meeting: Finally, the volunteers attend an ‘Assignment’ meeting where they are given their geographic deployment location, ID cards, expense reports, etc. (3 hrs)
