CCPR Announces Post-Disaster Research Competition for Full-Time NYU Faculty

October 11, 2005 11:27 AM

Catastrophic events such as September 11 and more recently, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, bring to light issues that should be pursued through timely and rigorous scientific research. To promote and initiate such research, NYU’s Center for Catastrophe Preparedness and Response (CCPR) is pleased to announce a university-wide competition to sponsor projects relating to catastrophes that relate to two hurricanes in the Gulf area.

Proposals should address preparedness, response, or recovery issues highlighted by Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Rita. Any topic may be proposed, however, preference will be given to research that is generally associated with the following categories representing current CCPR focus areas:

Preparedness
- private sector, governmental, and non-profit preparedness
- business/economic rationale for preparedness
- economic impact of crisis (macro/micro)

Response
- research regarding vulnerable populations
- legal issues associated with response
- communications issues (policy, systems, technologies)
- public/private sector information flow

Recovery
- victim and first responder trauma, especially related to health, broadly defined
- displaced populations
- role of various sectors (private/public/non-profit) in recovery

As these grants are intended to provide seed funding for sustainable research, preference will be given to proposals that show promise of continuation.

Format: Proposals should be no more than five pages in length and should contain: description, work-plan, deliverables, timeline, and budget. Please also include a discussion of potential future funding sources, relationships, etc.

Awards: Up to five awards will be made. Each award will be a maximum of $15,000.

Deadline: October 14, 2005

All typical research expenses are permissible. The proposals will be reviewed by a panel of faculty at NYU.
