About Us
At times, it seems the only people at NYU who know what student council does are the council members themselves. The one thing this website should do over all others is help you understand why we exist and what we do. In that spirit, here are frequently-heard and informative questions (and answers—we won’t leave you hanging) someone a stranger to council could ask.
What is student council?
The students of the College of Arts and Science (CAS) elect the College of Arts and Science Student Council (CASSC) to serve as their student governing body of the school. The CASSC are the primary representatives, advocates, and liaisons to the CAS community, including its administration, faculty, alumni, and students, as well as to the public. Our mission is a two-fold: advocacy and programming. On the advocacy end we strive to gather and express student opinions, actively represent student views, appropriately address student concerns, and provide a forum for the student body. On the programming end we strive to create and continue social traditions and programs designed to foster cohesiveness within the entire undergraduate population; for example, we are responsible for the annual Block Party on Washington Place, the Faculty-Student Banquet, the CAS Annual Formal, the Alumni-Student Banquet, and Bun Week (the CAS spirit week).
Why should I join?
Student council is a great way of becoming an active member of the CAS community. It provides a forum where students can voice their opinions about the school and begin to enact changes. It also provides students with the opportunity to be involved in the planning of major collegiate events. Most importantly though, it is a great way to meet other CAS students and have fun.
How do I join?
Anyone and everyone can join student council. To be recognized as a member and to be granted voting rights, a person must have attended at least four General Assembly meetings and one event.
