An introduction…

You may be asking yourself, “What the hell is student council?” It’s a fair question; most council members don’t know the answer themselves until they join. Student government at NYU is convoluted, at best, but we’ll still try to explain why we’re here.

Basically, the answer boils down to the council’s two aims: student affairs and student relations. Seriously. They’re different, trust us. Our student affairs measures aim to raise spirits and foster a sense of community. Student relations involve representing the students of CAS. If there’s something you’d like to change at NYU, but don’t know who to talk to, we’re the place to start.

Whatever. It’s complicated.

How to find your way

• The short introduction up there is just that, short. There is another, more in-depth description about student council for you to read.
• Every power student council holds comes from our constitution. Without it, we’d be lost.
• Most matters presented to council start in a committee. These smaller groups are the best to become involved and have your voice heard.
• As you might’ve already read, one of our main objectives is to build a CAS community. We do this primarily through events planned throughout the year.
• One of our most important duties is to support and foster CAS clubs. You can learn about existing clubs and how to found your own.
• As to be expected for anyone spending NYU’s dough, there’s a never-ending paper trail for council members, clubs, and just about everyone else. Fortunately, all of our forms are online, so you can keep up.
• Council members aren’t the parliamentary-procedure-following robots we may seem. Put a face to the name with our directory.
