Advising and Support

Advising
The Preprofessional Advising Center is located in room 901 of the Silver Center, with a team of six full-time advisers and two staff members who are ready to assist you.

Although we have a lot of experience in advising postbaccalaureate students and plenty of resources to offer you, the ultimate decision and responsibility for your medical school planning rests with you. We can explain what premedical and medical school education entails and provide statistical data and information about the probability of your admission to medical school, but we cannot tell you whether you will enjoy medicine, be a good physician, or find a job that fulfills your expectations upon medical school graduation. The answers to these questions depend on you.

Healthcare Experience
Some of you will already have had experience in a healthcare setting before even applying to NYU, and have thought thoroughly about why you would like a career in medicine. Long-term experience in the healthcare field is essential before and while you are taking the required science courses.

You should become well-informed about the career decision you are making. By now, we expect that you have defined for yourself what motivates you towards a healthcare career and what specifically you hope your contribution will be, as well as what satisfaction you plan to gain from your life's work. This commitment should be supplemented with direct experience in a healthcare setting.

There are countless ways in which you can acquire experience. The easiest way is through volunteer work in a hospital, hospice, clinic, ambulance corps, or special facility (such as a nursing home, home for the severely disabled, etc.). It does not matter where you choose to work. Most students choose an establishment close to either home or school. Paid positions are equally valuable, and if you are working in a healthcare setting, you should continue to do so while taking classes.

Nearby hospital volunteer offices include the following (please contact the Preprofessional Advising Office for a complete list):

  • St. Vincent’s Hospital (pick up application in the Preprofessional Advisement Office)
  • Beth Israel Medical Center Volunteer Service, 1 Ave. and E 16th Street. Phone: (212) 420-2733
  • New York University Medical Center Volunteers, 550 First Ave. Phone: (212) 263-6100
  • New York Downtown Hospital Volunteers, 170 William Street. Phone: (212) 312-5108
  • Cabrini Medical Center Volunteers, E. 19 St. and 3 Ave. Phone: (212) 995-6773

Registration
Typically you may register during November for the following spring semester, and in April for the following summer and fall semesters. You should meet with a prehealth advisor during this registration period to have your course selections approved and to get clearance for registration on Torchtone or through "Albert." Once enrolled in our program, postbaccs register at the same time as our undergrads.

Tuition Payments
Tuition for our program is on a per-credit basis. For current rates for College of Arts & Science undergraduate courses, please see the Bursar's website at www.nyu.edu/bursar. NYU considers registration and payment of tuition to be two parts of the registration process. You reserve your position in a class by registering, and you secure that position when you pay your tuition. When you register for the first time, you should pay immediately. The Bursar’s Office is located at 25 West 4th Street. For subsequent registrations, you may register early but you must pay your tuition by the deadline (which is before the beginning of the semester). If you do not pay by this deadline, your early registration is voided and you will have to start the registration process all over from scratch.

NYU ID
Once you have registered for courses, you will need to obtain an NYU identification card from the I.D. Photo Center in 7 East 12th Street, first floor, (212) 443-2273. With this I.D. you will have access to all NYU facilities.
