We're delighted you're joining us at the College of Arts and Science. To make your transition to NYU as exciting and easy as possible, we've designed a special orientation program. For three days this summer, while most of the University community is away, the College will belong to you. You'll stay in one of our residence halls and participate in an array of group discussions, individual meetings with advisors, workshops, presentations by professors, and informal conversations with your new classmates and upper-grade students from the College. You'll learn about us, and we'll learn about you!

Why is Orientation important?
The primary goal of Orientation at the College of Arts and Science is to introduce you to NYU and, in particular, to the College. More specifically, Summer Orientation has two purposes: (1) to provide you with academic advising, curricular and degree requirement information, and course registration and (2) to orient you to your new life as an NYU student.

You'll learn about the philosophy of higher education in the College of Arts and Science, meet your first year advisor, take placement exams, and receive one-on-one advising prior to registering for classes for the fall term. Our staff will work with you in small groups to ensure that you understand the Morse Academic Plan, the curriculum completed by all CAS students. We'll offer workshops to introduce you to resources that may help you to explore future academic or professional choices. We will also provide information on academic policies, expectations, and procedures so that you understand your options as a student in the College.

To make you feel at home at CAS and NYU, Orientation also includes social activities, informal discussions, and other opportunities to help you make friends and to familiarize you with NYU and the surrounding Greenwich Village neighborhood. Because the College is located in the center of a major city, we will talk about appropriate practices to insure your comfort and safety in an urban university setting.

Finally, we will provide you with opportunities to discuss your expectations, perceptions, and anxieties regarding college life with fellow new students, upper-grade students, and advisors. Summer Orientation is the cornerstone of a process of academic and social development that will continue in September and throughout your undergraduate experience.

One Last Word
Orientation is for you. We want to welcome you to our community and help you feel, as soon as possible, that you are a vital and contributing member. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity and that your four years here will be intellectually challenging and personally rewarding.

See you this summer!
