Awards, prizes, and scholarships are important not only as recognitions of excellence, but also as incentives to future achievement. Some of the highest honors are:
Dean's List
(for students who have achieved an average of 3.65 or higher for that academic year (September - May) in at least 28 graded points)
Φβκ -- Phi Beta Kappa
(a national honors society)
Honorary Societies of individual departments
(most of which require at least a 3.5 grade point average)
Latin Honors
(graduation with the titles cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude for students with a clean record of conduct and grade point averages of 3.5, 3.7, or 3.9 respectively)
Specialized awards and prizes
(prizes for creative writing, for the best term paper, for public speaking, for academic excellence in a particular field, and for service projects; plus academic prizes offered by each department)
Prestigious national and international awards
(Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Fulbright, and Goldwater Fellowships)
