FAQs
What is the On-Campus Recruitment (OCR) Program?
OCR is one of the many ways to discover job and internship opportunities. Through OCR, employers come to the NYU Wasserman Center to interview students. In addition to participating in OCR, we recommend that you also attend our seminars, apply for positions via NYU CareerNet, attend career fairs, and meet with a career counselor to help identify opportunities that are right for you.
How does OCR work?
OCR is accessible through the jobs tab in your NYU CareerNet account. Once you are in the jobs section, you can filter jobs to view only OCR positions by selecting show me "OCR jobs"
You must attend an OCR Orientation to gain access. The schedule of upcoming orientations can be found through your NYU CareerNet account. Through OCR you can:
- View position descriptions
- Apply to jobs
- Sign up for interviews
Who can participate in OCR?
OCR is open to all NYU students enrolled in a degree program who are graduating in 2014 and 2015.
I'm a December graduate and would like to use OCR through the second semester. Can I still participate?
December graduates still maintain OCR privileges throughout the spring semester.
Can I interview if I am currently studying abroad?
Yes, if you are selected for an interview, please sign up for a time slot that works for you. Please email recruitment@nyu.edu to let us know you are abroad, and we will reach out to the employer on your behalf to see if they are willing to interview you virtually or phone during your time slot.
I forgot some of the information from the OCR Orientation. Is it possible to access that information?
If you attended an OCR Orientation, you have access to the "OCR Video Tutorials" in the "Announcements" section of your NYU CareerNet homepage.
I haven't been able to attend an OCR Orientation, and now I'm missing all of the deadlines!
We offer OCR Orientations almost every week. You will not be able to gain access to OCR without first attending an OCR Orientation. To sign up for the next available OCR Orientation, log into your NYU CareerNet account and RSVP by clicking "Events" followed by the Seminars tab. Please note that you are also required to attend an Acing the Interview Seminar prior to your first interview on campus.
How many documents can I upload to my NYU CareerNet account?
You can upload a total of 20 documents. All documents will be converted to a PDF; this process will take several minutes.
How do I upload an unofficial transcript?
Copy and paste your unofficial transcript into a Word document. Upload that document to your the "Documents" tab in your NYU CareerNet account, and select "unofficial transcript" as the document type.
I submitted the wrong resume/cover letter. Can I change it?
As long as the resume submission period has not ended, you may withdraw your application and resubmit the revised documents.
I want to delete a resume I have already submitted to a position. Will that affect my submission?
You are able to delete resumes and cover letters from your Documents without it affecting your submission. Once you submit documents for a position, the only way they can be deleted is if you "withdraw application."
Will the employer see that I have withdrawn my resume? Will the employer see if I applied on the last day of the resume submission period?
No, the employer is not able to view any resumes until the resume submission period is over. Submissions are then organized in alphabetical order.
How do I sort job search results?
To search for OCR jobs, log in to your NYU CareerNet account and select the "Jobs" tab to see all job listings in the NYU CareerNet system. Under "Jobs" you will see a "Show Me" menu. Here, select "OCR jobs only". Please note, you can also sort by "Interviews I qualify for". To sort by deadline, in the Search Results, select "Deadline".
How often should I check OCR?
Every day.
It is important to log in to your NYU CareerNet account often so you do not miss out on application and interview sign up deadlines. Please note: It is especially important to check your NYU CareerNet account frequently if you are selected as an Alternate for a position, as these time slots are filled on a first come, first served basis.
Should I include a cover letter or transcript along with my resume?
For OCR opportunities, you should only include a cover letter or transcript if the documents are requested in the job posting. Note that it is important to save the correct "document type" (resume, cover letter, unofficial transcript) when uploading your documents. For all applications outside of OCR, we always recommend submitting a cover letter along with your resume.
An organization is recruiting for multiple positions. Can I submit my resume to more than one position at the same organization?
The job description will often specify if the organization limits the number of positions to which you can apply. Several employers do allow you to apply for more than one position. However, some will only allow you to apply to one position.
* Note: If you choose to apply for multiple positions, please keep in mind that often the same individual(s) at the company may receive and review all of your application materials. If you apply to too many positions, you may appear less focused on your career goals. We recommend applying to a maximum number of 3 positions at the same company.
What time is the application deadline?
All applications for OCR positions close at 11:59 PM the date of the deadline. Submit your applications well before this time to ensure that your application is successfully submitted.
I received a message saying I do not meet the job requirements, but I do.
Update your profile in NYU CareerNet to be certain it accurately reflects your graduation date, major and GPA. If your profile is not correct or not filled out entirely, you will not be able to apply to all positions.
What can I do if I feel I'm qualified for an OCR position, but I'm unable to apply due to the qualifications set by the employer?
There can be several reasons that you may be unable to submit your resume to a position. First, find out why you are not eligible for the position by reviewing the position requirements. Be sure that your NYU CareerNet profile is up to date. Next, double check that the resume submission period has not ended. If you are not within the resume submission, you will not be able to apply. If you still can't apply, email recruitment@nyu.edu detailing your situation, including the company, position title, and Job ID. Please be sure to email the OCR Team within the resume submission period.
How do I know if I have been invited to interview?
Although the system will send you an e-mail notifying you if you have been invited to interview, we recommend logging into your NYU CareerNet account and reviewing your status each day.
What does it mean if I am a preselect?
Employers select the students they wish to interview. Selected students are designated as "preselects". If you are a preselect, you are guaranteed an interview spot as long as you sign up. Please note, you are only guaranteed an interview if you sign up for your interview during the preselect sign-up period. Alternate sign-up begins immediately after the preselect sign-up deadline. All sign up deadlines can be found within the job description.
hat does it mean if I am an alternate?
An alternate can sign up for an interview if a preselect chooses to decline an interview. Alternates can only sign up for an interview time slot during the alternate sign up period, after the preselect sign up period ends.
I was selected as a preselect. However, I can't sign up for an interview because no times are available. How can I sign up?
Make sure that the preselect sign-up period is open. If you do not sign up for an interview during the preselect sign up period, the alternate sign-ups begins and your time slot may go to another student. Another possible problem might be a conflict in interview times. Time slots will not show up if you already have an interview scheduled during that time. If this is the case, please email recruitment@nyu.edu immediately and we will work with you to schedule your interview.
Can I schedule two interviews back-to-back?
During the OCR interview season, it is fairly typical for students to have back-to-back interviews. Please let the OCR Team know prior to your first interview. This way, if your first interview runs long, we can notify the second interviewer.
I have been selected for an interview but I decided I am not interested in the position. Do I have to sign up?
No. If you are selected as a preselect for a position, but no longer interested in the position, please decline the interview. This allows an Alternate to sign up in your place. You can decline an interview by selecting the "Decline Interview" option.
What is the cancellation policy for OCR interviews?
Cancellations of on-campus interviews must be made no less than four business days prior to the scheduled interview date.
I had an on-campus interview. Should I send a thank-you letter?
We strongly encourage you to send a thank you letter/email to the interviewer(s) to thank them for their time and to reiterate your interest in the position. Contact information is available outside of the interview room and at the OCR desk on the day of your interview.
Can the OCR team provide me with recruiter contact information?
Due to our agreements with employers, we cannot give out recruiter contact information if you did not interview with them through OCR.
What is the offer policy?
SPRING 2013: We ask employers to give students three weeks or until February 25, 2013 (whichever comes later) to decide about an offer.
FALL 2013: We ask employers to give students four weeks or until November 15, 2013 (whichever comes later) to decide about an offer. If a summer internship is converted to a full-time offer, students have until October 25, 2013 to decide.
SPRING 2014: We ask that employers give students three weeks or until February 24, 2014 (whichever comes later) to decide.
What kinds of organizations recruit through OCR?
Organizations from a variety of industries recruit through OCR. We approve positions on a rolling basis throughout the OCR process. Be sure to check NYU InterviewNet frequently for the most recently posted positions.
