Specialized Seminars and Presentations Master's and doctoral students'
career planning and job search concerns are covered throughout the academic
year. Topics relevant to both the academic and non-academic job search are addressed.
The Academic Job Interview (for Master's and Doctoral students), Non-academic
Resumes for PhDs, and a Career Development Open House for Graduate Students
are among the events offered.
NYU CareerNet Students looking for full-time, part-time, or internship
positions can tap into the NYU CareerNet database for current openings
in a wide variety of fields, such as the arts, communications, education, business,
and the nonprofit sector. The job descriptions provide contact information,
qualifications, and details of the position responsibilities. Access to the
database can be obtained via the Center web site.
Career Fairs During the academic year, The Wasserman Center for Career
Development invites organizations to campus to discuss employment opportunities
with NYU students. Employers collect resumes and may even schedule interviews.
The fields represented include business, education, social services, and the
nonprofit sector. This is an excellent way for graduate students to learn what
employers seek in a job candidate, and also to network for job leads.
On-Campus Recruitment Program From September through April, organizations
from a wide variety of for profit and non-profit industries visit the Wasserman
Center for Career Development and interview both undergraduate and graduate
students for full-time employment after graduation (excluding Law, Medicine,
Dentistry and M.B.A. students).
Fax Referral Service Students can drop off their resumes to reception;
they are kept on file for a month in order to be faxed to an employer in the
event an appropriate non-academic position comes to our attention. This is
an additional way for graduate students to supplement their job search and
generate leads.
Contact Lists Organizations listed in the contact lists have expressed
an interest in NYU graduates in the past. The contact's name, organization,
and address are provided.
Internships An internship is a great way to acquire practical experience
to complement graduate training. Employers are interested in hiring graduate
students for full- and part-time employment. These opportunities--on a paid,
stipend, or credit-bearing basis--are with organizations throughout the metropolitan
area. The internship listings are located on NYU CareerNet.
Computer Facilities. Computers and laser printers are available for
writing cover letters, CV's, and resumes.
Career Resource Center Books relevant to graduate students, such as
the Academic Job Search Handbook, are available. Also useful are directories
and corporate information for researching potential employers, as well as the The
Chronicle of Higher Education, The Chronicle of Philanthropy,
and ArtSearch for locating job leads. Professional organizations representing
most fields can be found in the National Trade & Professional Associations directory.
Students can use a variety of literature and videotapes to investigate career
options and to learn the most effective job-hunting techniques.
Individual Counseling The WCCD counseling staff assists graduate students
with their career-planning and job search. Students work with a counselor to
develop a CV, resume, and/or a cover letter, as well as to strengthen their
interviewing and job-hunting skills. They can also assess their skills and
interests and evaluate career options. Appointments are scheduled by phone
or in person. Students with full-time commitments during regular business hours
may schedule an evening appointment.
General Seminars Seminars are offered throughout the year at convenient
times during the day and evening. Topics include Planning Your Career, Resume & Cover
Letter Writing, Job Search & Networking Skills, and Interviewing
Skills. Additional seminars, such as Job Search Strategies for International
Students, are held regularly during the academic year. Students should
reserve a seat in advance either by phone or in person.
Videotaped Mock Interviews Students can strengthen their job interviewing
skills by meeting with a counselor to videotape and review a mock interview.
Mentor Program Successful professionals serve as mentors to provide
students an inside look at various occupations. Mentors may suggest ways to
pursue a specific field or industry. To participate, students must first meet
with a counselor.
Counselors are available for brief five-minute sessions. This service is
particularly useful for quick cover letter, CV, or resume critiques, and for
further information about the office.
