Homes & Community Renewal: Diversity Internship Program

Deadline in April, check website for details

New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) consists of all the State's major housing and community renewal agencies, including, The Affordable Housing Corporation, The Division of Housing and Community Renewal, Housing Finance Agency, State of New York Mortgage Agency, Housing Trust Fund Corporation and others.

Recognizing that internships are often the foundation of informed career choices, the Diversity Internship Program (the "Program") was established in 1990. Today, with the co-sponsorship of JP Morgan Chase & Co., Raymond James & Associates, Inc., RBC Capital Markets, and Samuel A. Ramirez & Co., Inc., these internships are an established point of entry into the business of public finance.

Each year, up to four interns are selected for the year-long Program which includes two six month terms. The first term is spent working at the New York State Housing Finance Agency on single and multi-family debt issuance, real estate finance, and mortgage insurance issues. For the second six-month term, the interns will work at one of the co-sponsoring private sector firms, where they function as analysts in these and other related areas.

The program is open to students who have, or expect to receive, a baccalaureate degree in May/June 2011. To be eligible, students must be New York State residents who are permanent residents of the United States. Individuals with advanced degrees or who are in advanced degree programs are not eligible. Students who are member of a group that has been historically under-represented in the financial services industry are particular encouraged to apply. Successful candidates must have an interest in finance, be familiar with governmental institutions, and have the willingness to work hard in the furtherance of an exciting and rewarding career. Quantitative ability, as demonstrated in courses such as economics, business administration or mathematics, is important, but is not necessary to have majored in one of these areas. The salary for the one year internship is $40,000 plus medical benefits.

The interns are selected from dozens of applicants. After admission to the Program, each intern is assigned a mentor, enrolled in a finance course, and is given the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of housing finance.

Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP)

Typical application deadline in November, check website for exact timeline

Since 1973, the 4A's Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP) has helped jumpstart the careers of more than 2,000 African-American, Asian-American, Latino-American, Native-American, multiracial and multiethnic aspiring advertising professionals.

Each year, undergraduate and graduate students are selected for a 10-week paid summer internship at an 4A's member advertising agency. Students gain practical work experience, establish key industry contacts, and perhaps most importantly, become better prepared to land a full-time job in advertising when they graduate. At the same time, the program gives advertising agencies a cost-effective way to identify and recruit talented multicultural students.

Upon completion of the program, interns become members of the MAIP Alumni Association, a close-knit family of MAIP graduates that fosters the development of future MAIP interns as well as the professional development of the program’s alumni.

The MAIP Student application package is available on the 4A’s Web site www.aaaa.org. The application can be retrieved in the Talent Development section of the 4A’s website. Click the internships tab or you may refer to the spotlight section on the homepage.

The Villers Fellowship

The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice was created in 2005 by Philippe Villers, Founder and President of Families USA. Each year, the Villers Fellow works in our health policy department and assists our organization's efforts to improve access to health coverage for all Americans, especially for low-income and other vulnerable communities. Specifically, the Villers Fellow will conduct research on a range of health care policy issues, and write and contribute to publications that are relevant to health reform implementation and other health policy issues.

In creating the fellowship, Mr. Villers aspired to develop a network of young leaders who share a passion for health care justice. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to health care justice work following their year as a fellow. Additionally, in order to encourage the development of future leaders, Villers Fellows must commit to mentoring at least one person over the course of their careers.

Summer Venture in Management Program

Typical Deadline in early March; check website for exact timeline

A one-week management training program for rising college seniors designed to increase diversity and opportunity in business education. A twenty-year tradition at HBS, this unique educational experience helps participants develop a broader understanding of the challenges business leaders face, the many dimensions of the business world, and the impact they can have on their community and the world through business leadership.

Using the renowned case method of instruction, HBS faculty lead class discussions on current management issues. Participants spend evenings analyzing real-business cases, and use morning study groups and classes to examine and debate their ideas through lively interaction with peers and faculty. This is the life of an MBA student at HBS. The academic program is supplemented by presentations from HBS administrators and alumni who provide information about the impact that an MBA degree can have on their lives and careers.

While attendance in SVMP does not guarantee admission to HBS, participants are encouraged to consider a graduate business degree after completing their undergraduate education. Not being admitted to SVMP does not affect an applicant's admission to the MBA program at a future date. Admission to both programs (SVMP and MBA) is highly competitive.

Looking for Work? Get Off the Web!

It’s tempting these days to sit at a computer and let your fingers do the walking. Scan enough job boards, email a ton of recruiters and work LinkedIn and Twitter like crazy and your next job will magically appear in your in-box.

It rarely works that way.

Ignore the doom and gloom scenarios: many companies, non-profits and governmental agencies ARE hiring.

Women For Hire fall career fairs—now in the 11th year— offer the perfect forum to meet hiring managers, attend a top-notch job seminar and glean some valuable advice from our resident career guru, Tory Johnson.

So take a break from the web, leave your house and join us in New York on Wednesday, November 4.

*Free admission * Free career seminars  *Free resume critiquing * Resumes required for admittance * Business attire required

Apply for Harvard Business School's Summer Venture in Management Program

Date
Monday, May 17
Time
All day
Location
Description

The Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP), hosted by Harvard Business School [http://www.hbs.edu/mba/svmp/] is a week of HBS instruction (June 19-25, 2010) that exposes high-potential college students in the summer between their junior and senior year to the HBS MBA experience and the variety of opportunities a degree in management can afford. This twenty-year HBS tradition demonstrates the many rewards of an MBA degree to students who may not otherwise have considered this path.

Participants spend a week on campus living the MBA student experience  attending classes, analyzing case studies, and debating management issues with peers and faculty. This unique educational experience, in combination with a summer internship at a sponsoring company or organization, gives participants a broader understanding of the challenges business leaders face, the innumerable opportunities that exist in management, and the impact they can have on their community and the world through leadership.

Participants will be selected based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, and personal characteristics. Consistent with the objective of promoting educational diversity and opportunity in business leadership, additional criteria to be considered among others, are whether the applicant is:

the first family member to attend college; a member of a group that is currently underrepresented in business schools and corporate America (e.g. African-American, Latino, Native American, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender); from a family with little business education or experience; and/or from a school whose graduates do not typically attend a top-tier university ( e.g., attends a rural or predominantly minority college, or has attended a community college as part of a four-year degree).

The SVMP Application is now available online. The deadline is May 17, 2010. To apply, and for more information about this program, please visit the SVMP website:http://www.hbs.edu/mba/svmp/.
