Boot Camp: Skills to Change the World
We would like to invite you to join us at NYU for this year's Boot Camp: Skills to Change the World on Friday, February 27, 2009. Our goal through this event is to give the students an opportunity to gain a basic understanding of issue areas and the structure within the non-profit sector, as well as network with a variety of professionals in the non-profit field. In addition, students will be able to leave the program with a knowledge of industry terminology to include in their job search.
You can choose to participate in panel discussions and/or a mentoring lunch. If you would like to speak on a panel, please select one of the following topics: Programming & Direct Service, Outreach & Development, or Management & Operations. Each panel will last 50 minutes, and will be conducted twice, back-to-back, for two different groups of students. Brief descriptions of each panel are listed below. The panels are scheduled for 10:45am and 11:45am at The Wasserman Center for Career Development (133 East 13th Street).
The mentoring lunch will take place from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. The lunch will provide students with an opportunity to ask questions about the non-profit field, seek advice and learn about your career path. It will provide you a chance to meet some NYU students in an effort to help them improve their knowledge of the non-profit sector.
Panel topics
Programming & Direct Service
(Responsibilities focus on designing the nonprofits' programs and services).
Goal - to introduce students to hands-on opportunities in the field of service.
Questions will focus on the core programs/services/resources your organization offers, skills involved in strategizing to generate ideas, and implementations for these services. Describe a few key programs and deliverables that you provide through your organization. How are ideas generated? What do you enjoy most about this area and what keeps you there?
Outreach & Development
(Primary involvement in fund raising).
Goal - to help the students understand the importance of getting the right people behind their organization and what type of work that entails. Questions will focus on the duties of your role, skills used for outreach to donors, what event planning entails, how your role fits into the bigger picture/cause and what made you choose to work in this particular area (as opposed to the others)?
Management & Operations
(Administrative oversight of organization).
Goal - to give students an inside perspective into the different areas that occur behind the scenes of an organization. Questions will focus on the different areas/structure of the organization, what skills are necessary for running it, what specific tasks are entailed, and how does the management side of your organization aide the organizations' mission?
All panels will go over general information such as some of the issues/challenges/trends that the field is facing, ways to network, organizations to join, and advice for students beginning their career.
Please email career.bootcamp@nyu.edu if you are interested in speaking on a panel or attending the networking lunch.
