When will a student use the Credit Card services of CheckFree?

Students will use CheckFree (formerly called PhoneCharge) to make a credit card payment toward their student account or Bursar bill. The only exception will be for the payment of SCPS non-credit and Dental School Continuing Education courses.

What is included on the Bursar Bill or in a student's account?

Tuition and registration fees, housing and meal plans, health insurance, general fees (course, lab, major, maintaining matriculation, equipment and other miscellaneous fees), finance charges, computer deferment purchase plan, past due University Health Center and past due long distance telephone charges.

Which company will provide the Credit Card Payment service?

CheckFree (formerly called PhoneCharge), a leading provider of electronic bill collection services for utilities, telecommunications companies, cable television companies, schools and colleges, and various local and state governments.

How will a student or parent access the service?

  • Call a toll free CheckFree number dedicated to NYU: 877-527-7851 (within the U.S.),
    or (214) 256-7445 (outside the U.S.)
  • Access the CheckFree website directly
  • Access the CheckFree credit card website through Albert via NYUHome.

When can a student use CheckFree to make a Credit Card payment?

24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Will all Credit Cards be accepted?

Master Card, American Express and Discover will be accepted. Visa will not be participating in the program.

What is the fee charged?

A convenience fee of 2.5% of the amount of the payment will be charged.

Does NYU profit in any way from the fee charged?

No, the convenience fee is paid to CheckFree (formerly called PhoneCharge). NYU receives no portion of the fee.

Where will credit cards, including Visa, continue to be accepted at NYU?

The Bookstore, University Health Center, for SCPS non-credit and Dental Continuing Education registration, campus cash deposits and for Application Fees received over the web.

When is a payment made through CheckFree posted to a student's account?

Payments made by 4:00pm are posted the next day. Payments made after 4:00pm are posted the 2nd day after payment.

Will a student paying a past due balance have to wait for NYU to post the payment before they can register?

No, the student can notify the Bursar's Office who will confirm that the payment has been made through CheckFree and clear the student to register.

What if a student encounters a problem in making a Credit Card payment through the CheckFree System?

The student or parent can contact the CheckFree Customer Service Desk (1-888 840-9603) or e-mail them directly through their website. This service is available during normal business hours but will be expanded shortly from 8am to 8pm; or the student or parent can call (212 998-2806), e-mail or visit (25 West 4th St.) the Bursar's Office and receive assistance in processing the credit card payment during normal business hours.

Can a student pay their Fall Housing Reservation deposit, due in June, by a credit card?

Yes. The Housing Reservation deposit can be processed through the CheckFree payment service. A special link for Housing Deposits will be provided during the deposit period.

If a student uses CheckFree to make a payment and is entitled to a refund, does the student need to notify CheckFree?

No, the student will receive a refund in the form of a check from the Bursar's Office.

Will a student who is entitled to a refund and who paid using CheckFree receive all or a portion of the convenience fee back?

No, the convenience fee is non-refundable.
