Alternative Break Trips

Students provide direct service to communities in need - house building, pipe-laying, planting and more while living and studying the connection between social justice, service and Judaism. Students return from the trips with knowledge and energy and continue to advocate for social justice on campus.

  • The Jewish Disaster Response Corps (JDRC) is recruiting people who are available to work in Texas this winter break in its program to help rebuild Southeastern Texas communities still recovering in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. Much work remains to be done, and that is where the JDRC will be helping out. JDRC volunteers, working together with local community groups, will help to gut and clean and repair homes damaged by the hurricane.
The JDRC volunteers have a choice of working the week of January 3-10, or January 10-17. We are planning to work in the island city of Galveston or Bridge City. Volunteers will make their own travel arrangements to Houston where they'll meet up with the JDRC team; from there the JDRC will provide transportation, housing accommodations and three square meals a day.
For more information about the JDRC see our website JDRC. If you are interested in applying for this trip please email Elie Lowenfeld at erl251@gmail.com.
