The Bronfman Center Gallery at New
York University is proud to announce the upcoming
exhibition of “Israel 1973,” featuring
the photographs of renowned photographer Norma Holt,
opening November 6th from 6 pm - 10 pm and on view
through November 23rd.
Holt, whose photographic career spans more than forty
years, remains a prominent voice in capturing the
soul of humanity through her photographic imagery.
Initially photographing children to supplement her
family’s income, Holt’s affinity for photography
soon led her to fix her lens on artists, and later,
on women from around the world.
For Holt, the camera has allowed her to contribute
to the community through exhibitions urging tolerance
and fairness, and at the same time denouncing racism,
sexism, and the abuse of the planet. “I never
attempted scenery. I never attempted flowers or things
like that. People are what interest me. I like to
find out what people are about, what matters to them,
and to use my political sensibilities to make a statement
about the world I live in.”
“Israel 1973” allows viewers the opportunity
to see more than just what life was like in Israel
thirty years ago, but to see what life is like. Holt’s
are not images of Jews or Muslims, but of people living.
“All these people wanted to do was live, and
have their religious ceremonies and have their music
and have their children.” Through her photographs,
Holt impresses upon us that which we don’t see
in the headlines – people going about their
“day-to-day” as we all do. Hers truly
is the art of living.
