Top Obama Foreign Policy Advisor, Tony Lake, Speaks at Bronfman Center

Obama?s foreign policy adviser, Tony Lake, was at NYU on January 31st talking to students at the Bronfman Center about why he thinks the Democratic presidential hopeful is so great. But before he got into details, Lake, who served as national security adviser in the Clinton administration, described his own history of first being mistaken for, and then actually becoming, a Jew.

Hear the one about the rabbi and the imam?

A story in the Jewish Week described a presentation by Rabbi Yehuda Sarna and Imam Khalid Latif, "(Rabbi Sarna and Brother Latif), both young clerics at New York University, discussed the warm relations that have developed between their respective communities. One story that captivated the rabbis and imams involved a celebration of Israeli Independence Day by NYU?s Jewish students." Read more here...

Welcome Week Leaders of 2007

Welcome to NYU and welcome to the Bronfman Center! If youare a freshman, you will soon be receiving materials about all of our great Welcome Week programs happening at the end of August. Below you can read about some of our wonderful upperclassmen who will be at all of the Welcome Week programs to answer your questions! Have a question now? Feel free to email any one of them now! These are only some of the people who will be there. There are over 70 amazing Welcome Week Leaders this year! Again, welcome to NYU!

Jill is a senior studying Broadcast Journalism and Jewish History. She is originally from south Florida and loves the sun and manatees (the endangered sea cows). She has been active in the Bronfman Center since before she even arrived at NYU, in Hillel, Kesher: Reform Jews @ NYU, and SRL (Women's Programming). Jill looks forward to Welcome Week every year! She is excited for new folks and old experiencing crazy things all around the City.

Olga Kreimer is thrilled to be a Welcome Week leader, mostly because of the traditionally cool t-shirts. She's a sophomore studying Dramatic Writing and a big nerd all-around, so if you have questions about Tisch, pretentious people, all-nighters, basement dance parties, Kesher, free yoga classes, Californian stereotypes or walking in heels, she'll be happy to chat.

Hi! I'm Larissa Gabelman. I'm a sophomore at CAS on the pre-med track. I'm from Westchester County and love meeting new people. I adore old school movies, the gym at Palladium, and good desserts. I was a Jewish Life Liaison for Third North last year, and I'm looking forward to becoming much more active in the Bronfman Center this year. Can't wait to meet everyone! Feel free to email me at ldg259@nyu.edu.

Hi everyone! Welcome to NYU! My name is Benedetta Grasso. I'm a sophomore and my major is Dramatic Writing in Tisch School of the Arts. I might also double major in Middle East studies! I love NYC, its Art, its parks and fun neighborhoods. I'm obsessed with the Beatles, Israel, writing stories, watching and making movies....Ah, and I come from Milan, in the far far away Italy... I hope to see you a lot at Bronfman center! We have an amazing community and fun events that are just waiting for you!

Nanci is a senior studying Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is from North Miami Beach, FL, and loves living in the northeast so she can finally experience different seasons. She likes to watch and play tennis, read mystery novels and explore the city. Nanci is active in Koach: Conservative Jews at NYU, so if you have any questions about conservative Judaism on campus you should talk to her. She loves participating in all of the Bronfman Center activities and is looking forward to meeting new students during Welcome Week this year. If you want more information on anything or everything that she is interested in, email her at nanci.s@nyu.edu.

Lori Levine is a Sophomore in the General Studies Program and will be transferring to CAS next year. She is a European Studies major and minoring in politics. Last year, she was the Jewish Life Liaison for Weinstein Hall and had such a great experience. She is also the Shabbat and Holidays Chair for KESHER. She loves musicals, cooking, reading, and has a slight addiction to handbags of all kinds. She loves Welcome week and looks forward to meeting everyone and making some new friends!

Angelica Murdukhayeva is a sophomore studying Chemistry and Hebrew Language and Literature. She is from Queens, NY and is involved in Gesher: Israel at NYU and in planning fun Bronfman Center events. She loves long walks around the city, coffee and traveling. She is very excited to meet new freshmen during Welcome Week and to welcome them to this amazing university. Contact Angelica at am2805@nyu.edu.

Hi my name is Aaron Levine, I am a Sophomore in the Stern School of Business majoring in Finance and International Business. I live in Teaneck, went to Frisch and then Reishit. I like playing guitar, photography, running, and pretty much any sport. The Bronfman center is one of the best things at NYU and I?m looking forward to showing you how great it is.

Whitney is a Gallatin junior with a concentration in journalism, photography, and creative writing. She's from Long Island and loves to talk about pretty much anything (and take pictures of it all too!) If you have any questions about Hillel or Kesher, feel free to email her at wbp210@nyu.edu.

I'm Jessica Goldberg and I'm a sophomore and I'm majoring in foreign languages. I'm from New Jersey, but I love New York, especially its food, museums, and its amazing Jewish community! Here at Bronfman I'm involved with Koach, which is the group for Conservative Judaism. I'm looking forward to another exciting year at the Bronfman Center!

Hi! My name is Abbe Pick and I am a Junior in CAS majoring in Urban Design and Architecture Studies. Born and raised a Red Sox fan in Newton, MA I enjoy running along the Hudson, exploring the different neigborhoods of New York, and doing community service projects around town. Please feel free to e-mail me at aip226@nyu.edu with any questions about Jewish life on campus, dorming concerns, or where to get the best ice cream around NYU! Have a great summer and I look forward to meeting you! J

Josh is a junior studying Accounting in the Stern School of Business. He's from Ridgewood, NJ and loves sky diving, bowling, and finding the best hamburgers. He is also a big Monty Python and Rocky Horror fan. Josh is active in AEPi, Hillel, and Kesher: Reform Jews at NYU. He loves to travel and this summer he went around the world going to interesting places like Argentina, Copenhagen, London, Paris, Spain and Italy. He's most excited for the Welcome Week scavenger hunt so he can explore the city with everyone.

Hi my name is Jacob Bichachi. I am a junior in Steinhardt's Vocal Performance Program and I am a proud member of Hillel at NYU which is truly the most amazing organization on campus. Born and raised in Miami Beach, coming to NY was a huge adjustment for me so if you need any help getting settled in or have any questions ranging from "Where are the closest Kosher restaurants" to "What is the best thing playing on Broadway right now" feel free to ask.

Sylvia Shaykis was born in Kishinev, Moldova, but has been a proud New Yorker since age three and a half. She is a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, looking to major in Psychology and minor in Music. She went on Hillel's Alternative Spring Break to New Orleans last March and had an amazing time. Sylvia loves photography, babies, kittens and puppies, running along the Hudson, and her grandma's home cooking. She is excited to meet all you new freshmen!

Yossi is an enthusiastic, incredible, caring, sensitive, talented, capable, and most of all, modest, young man. As an undergraduate student enrolled in the Music Technology program within the Steinhardt School of Education, Culture, and Human Development at New York University, he knows what it's like to have a ridiculously redundant (albeit robust) school name. If you like long walks to the Apple store in Soho (it's really not that far), or candle light dinners at the Kosher Cafeteria, let Yossi know at ych248@nyu.edu. Deep down, he really does care, so drop him a line (especially if you're into reading Torah for KOACH--Conservative Judaism on campus).

Hi my name is Yvette and I hail all the way from Brooklyn, New York. I am a Half Syrian Half -Ashkenaz Jew, therefore I can relate to every type of Jewish food. My passions are painting, drawing, singing, and of course participating in all exciting activities the Bronfman Center has to offer. I am interested in studying law and art. I look forward to meeting you, answering your questions and just hanging out!

Hey my name is Brett Fischer, I was born and raised in New Jersey but all of my family is originally from New York. I am still undecided in regard to my major, although I am looking into history, sociology, or philosophy. I love playing and watching sports. My favorite teams are the Yankees and Jets. I am also very into music and love classic rock. I recently returned from my trip to Israel and it was amazing. I enjoy going to Hillel on Friday nights and I am excited to start my sophomore year.

Jennifer Kohanim is a junior in Steinhardt, majoring in music business. She is loving her time at NYU so far and feels so lucky to have such a special Jewish community within the larger NYU community. Jennifer spends her free time singing, dancing, searching the internet for new music, reading, writing, and discovering new places to go to in the city. Jennifer is also co-Vice President of NYU's Iranian Jewish Club, which will be hosting a bunch of cool events this year. Jennifer is also looking forward to meeting this year's incoming freshman!

Rebecca Goldings is a creative problem solver. Born and raised Dallas, this junior believes in ol' fashioned Southern hospitality and hopes that all freshmen are adequately welcomed into their new life at NYU. Rebecca initiated the first-ever Bronfman-sponsored speed dating event, Singles JEWNite: Bringing Together Nice Jewish Boys and Girls and participated in Ideas That Move: The Jewish Learning Fellowship. She studies Studio Art, concentrating in media (photography, video, and digital art), and minors in Computer Applications.

Hi everyone. My name is Sam Kessler Gilbride and I?m a sophomore studying for a degree in European History. I live in Syracuse, NY where I spend most of my time reading books and playing golf. Second semester I joined the board of Koach at NYU Hillel, where I am co-Gabbai. For the City, well, it is the Greatest Place on Earth. Embrace it! Love it! And ask lots of questions.

Hi kids! I?m David Saul, a junior in Stern. I?m from Atlanta, GA and I enjoy listening to music (mostly classic rock, funk, and jam bands), learning bass guitar, and hanging out with my Alpha Epsilon Pi brothers. I?m good at crossword puzzles and REALLY good at Super Smash Brothers 64. The Bronfman Center helped make NYU smaller for me and provided a great community when I needed one as a lost freshman, and I?m sure it can do the same for you. If you have any questions or just want to say hi, please feel free to email me at des315@nyu.edu or on Facebook.

Hi. My name is Andrew Gindea. I am going to be a Junior in CAS after having graduated from the General Studies Program last year. I grew up in Lawrence, New York and went to HAFTR High School. I played on the hockey, softball and soccer teams and was the captain of the hockey team. I love all sports (playing and watching). Oh, also, food is always good. I am currently Hillel's Religious Life and Pluralism Chair. If you have questions about it, or about how to get involved in any or all of the communities, please feel free to contact me at aeg286@nyu.edu. I hope to meet you all soon and I look forward to enjoying a great semester with all of you!

Hi! My name is Allison Flynn and I am from Toms River, NJ. I am majoring in nursing and also minoring in music. At the Bronfman Center I have been an active member of Koach: Conservative Judaism at NYU. I like being Jewish, Israel, running, violin, food, and anything medical related. I'm so excited to meet all the new students in the fall and hope to make your semesters at the Bronfman Center a lot of fun!

Hi, my name's Adam Grannick and I'm a Sophomore in Tisch School of the Arts, majoring in Film/TV production. I'm from Chicago and I like music, guacamole, playing Frisbee, and exploring New York City. I play violin and draw political cartoons for the Washington Square News. I?m looking forward to another great year at the Bronfman Center!

Emma is a sophomore majoring in Social and Cultural Analysis. In her spare time she sings gospel music, eats Apple Jacks and plays bocce ball. She is the Communication Chair of Kesher (Reform Jews at NYU), which is why you might find sarcastic emails from her in your inbox. Her most recent Halloween costume was Pregnant Britney Spears, which should reveal her vast knowledge of unimportant pop culture. She really likes to dance to rap and hip-hop, cause she is a g. Emma has a huge crush on Malcolm X and wishes that everyone loved the color pink as much as she does. She loves New Orleans and gutting house. You want to know Emma, for realz.

Abe is a sophomore in the Tisch School of the Arts majoring in Cinema Studies and Journalism. He is originally from Holliston, Massachusetts and has a great passion for movies and television. He has been very active in the Bronfman Center serving as a Jewish Life Liaison, working on the New York Jewish Student Film Festival, and helping to organize the Friday night Tisch at Bronfman. He is excited to meet all the new students this year. He can be contacted with any questions at aft229@nyu.edu

Hey incoming freshman, what's up? My name's Steve Benathen and I'm really excited about helping you guys transition into your first year here at NYU. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, I'm a sophomore studying Dramatic Writing in Tisch and I'm looking forward to meeting all of you. NYU is a huge school but if you make the effort, it can become your second home. The Bronfman Center is going to provide you guys with an awesome sense of community and I can't wait to help you guys become a part of it! Please ask me about any questions you have about NYU (my e-mail's sdb285@nyu.edu) because I know a lot (I'm involved in student government, I'm in a fraternity, I'm a Tisch Mentor, and I?m active in community service on-campus). Get ready guys, welcome week is gonna rock your world!

Hi, my name is Ellie Turk and I loveee NYU! I'm a sophomore in the Steinhardt school of education, majoring in communication studies. I'm from teaneck, nj which is town right over the George Washington bridge about forty minutes away from campus. I love Hillel and I am very active in the Bronfman center. I can't wait to meet you all in August, its gonna be amazing!

Elyse is a senior studying Education and Psychology. She is originally from New Jersey and loves running and anything outdoors. She has always enjoyed being a part of the Bronfman Center and the amazing community. She loves every Welcome Week and can't wait to meet everyone.

Hola! My name is is Erica and I am originally from sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am a junior in the Tisch School of the Arts majoring in Photography and Imaging and also minoring in Politics, Art History, and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. I work at the New York Trapeze School (come and give it a try!) and love the Bronfman Center for the community, the social action opportunities, and a providing a little bit of a small school feeling within NYU. I have lived at Hayden and Lafayette and am a big fan of biking through the city. Feel free to email me at ed704@nyu.edu if you have any questions!!

Hi my name is Sara Friedman and I'm a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences. I am from Lower Merion, PA and love suburbia. However, I am now an avid lover of New York City and the NYU area. Before coming to NYU I spent a year in Israel, so I am older than you think! My home away from home is the Kosher Caf and I can't wait to welcome you into the haven we call the Bronfman Center and by extension the real center of it all, the Kosher Caf. If you have any questions about NYU, Bronfman, or Shalhevet don?t hesitate to e-mail me at sbf243@nyu.edu

Henriette is a Junior in Steinhardt majoring in nutrition and minoring in special education. She's obsessed with the unified Jewish community at NYU and would love to tell you all about what goes on within it! She sometimes loves to cook for lots of people for Shabbat lunch, so whenever you feel like having a meal out of the kosher caf, tell her. You can find her working in the financial aid office during her free time to make that necessary money, wandering in WSP listening to the interesting music, or of course, eating in the kosher caf and hanging out in the BC!

Hey guys! My name is Sharon Hakakian and I'm a sophomore at NYU's College of Arts and Sciences. As of right now, I'm double- majoring in Journalism and Middle Eastern Studies, but who knows...I could end up going pre-med. I live in New Jersey, but I absolutely love the city and living here during the year. One of my favorite pastimes is probably wandering aimlessly in search of something I've never seen or experienced. I also really like Boy Meets World. I enjoy learning about new people and their individual stories soI'm excited to meet you all!

Hi my name is Ahuva Graber, and I am completely, 100 percent, in love with the Bronfman center. I am currently a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, and I am planning on majoring in Psychology. Originally, I come from way down south- Memphis, Tennessee to be exact- but I moved up here to the big city at a pretty young age, so I like to consider myself a New Yorker. My favorite color is pink, and I admit that I secretly (or actually not so secretly) am addicted to VH1, and enjoy almost every single show on the channel. I also absolutely loved being a freshmen, and cant wait to meet the future freshmen of 2007- 2008. Enjoy yourselves, and get ready for the greatest years of your life. Feel free to email me at hmg243@nyu.edu if you have any questions, or you just want to chat.

Hi my name is Alex Polson and I'm currently a sophomore communication major in Steinhardt (hoping to transfer into CAS for art history though). I'm originally from Maplewood, New Jersey but I'm a New Yorker at heart. I really love coffee and reading the New Yorker while drinking it. I'm also a member of the fencing team here at NYU and have been fencing since I was 14. I just got back from Israel this past summer and can't wait to return. Ihope that I can show you what a great community (even better Jewish community) we have here at NYU.

Lisa is a Sophomore in CAS. She's actually writing this little introductory blurb about herself as she sits in a hotel in Jerusalem on the Hillel Birthright trip. Ah! Originally, she's from a suburb just outside Washington D.C. At NYU, this U-Hall and Jewish Life Liaison (JLL) alumna loves the Bronfman Center and the city. She's sooo excited to get back to New York and for wonderful Welcome Week to begin! Yay!! P.S. Interested in Greek Life on Campus? Come talk to Lisa for more information.

Hi there! My name is Maya Glickman and I am a sophomore at the College of Arts and Science majoring in History and Journalism. I come from Teaneck, New Jersey and attended The Frisch School in nearby Paramus. I enjoy writing, soccer, and hanging out with my friends at NYU! I can't wait to see new faces and old at Welcome Week 2007!

Welcome to NYU! My name is Zach Klein and I am a senior in CAS double majoring in Politics and Economics. I?ve been very active in the NYU and Jewish communities throughout my college experience and served as President of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity (the only International Jewish Fraternity) this past year. Additionally, I was a CAS Orientation Leader two summers ago, so I pretty much know all there is to know about NYU. If you have any questions about Bronfman, the fraternity, or NYU in general, please feel free to contact me at zhk201@nyu.edu.

Rachel is a sophomore double-majoring in History and Journalism, with a print/online concentration. She was born in Oklahoma, but grew up in South Jersey, and now she's started calling New York home; a ballet dancer since she was two years old, Rachel also happens to be ridiculously obsessed with ice cream, showtunes, and getting involved at the Bronfman Center! Rachel is currently serving as Outreach Chair for KESHER: Reform Jews at NYU, and is a member of SRL (Sarah-Rachel-Rebecca-Leah), as well as last semester's Jewish Learning Fellowship. And, oh yeah, she's unbelievably excited for Welcome Week and an amazing fall semester!

l'm Alex Tenenbein, a junior at the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in mathematics. Last year I transferred to NYU. I am a native New Yorker and have lived in Greenwich Village my whole life. I love playing tennis and was a member of the NYU Men's Tennis Team this year. I also enjoy participating in the many activities that the Bronfman Center offers throughout the school year. I look forward to meeting all of you during Welcome Week. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about NYU, the Bronfman Center, New York City especially Greenwich Village, andtennis. My email is at1012@nyu.edu.

Hello to all New NYUers and not so new ones as well! My name is Sarah Fields and I originally hail from sunny San Diego, California. I am aReform Jew (President of Kesher, the Reform Jewish Students of NYU), a transfer student, a past participant in the NYU-London Study Abroad program and a lover of big cities (they're what I study). I am genuinely excited for Welcome Week this year and am very much looking forward to meeting new members of the Bronfman community and reconnecting with the ones I already know. If you would like to begin a dialogue with me about any of the above or something completely unrelated, please feel free to contact me at Sarah.Fields@nyu.edu.

Hi, I'm Gabe Slamovits and I'm a sophomore in the College of Arts and Science. I graduated from the Ramaz School in NYC and spent a year living and learning in Israel. One of the best things about the Bronfman Center is that it provides you with a community within the larger NYU community. Even though NYU's a huge university, it?s pretty easy to find your place once you get in the swing of things. I lived in Weinstein last year, and I?ll be living on the Tourism through Photography Explorations floor next year in Palladium. If you've got any questions about NYU, Bronfman, or living in New York, feel free to get in touch (Gabeslam@nyu.edu)! See you in the fall!

Hi, my name is Dana Szus and I'm from St. Louis, going into my junior year in CAS. I am very involved in Jewish life at NYU, most notably I am the secretary of Hillel, and I think that we have the most amazing Jewish community ever here at NYU. I love dancing, chemistry, cats, and thunderstorms, and my favorite food is ice cream. I can't wait to meet everyone, you'll never forget the times you have here! If you have any questions, feel free to email me at dbs286@nyu.edu

Hailing from the exotic, far away land of Cleveland, Ohio, Barry is proud to represent a distinct minority within the Jewish community: redheads. In fact, they were listed as an endangered species by Guttman's Guide to Ganimals (They added a "g" to animals to keep the alliteration). Seriously, though, I'm a laid-back dude from the midwest who just enjoys a good time hanging out with my peeps. Please - if you're a freshmen or anyone else - come talk to me about anything, NYU-related or otherwise. I'm always up for good conversation. I also enjoy long walks on the beach and romantic candlelit dinners overlooking a sunset over a lake with a mountain ridge backdrop. Wait... oops! Wrong blurb. That was supposed to be for JDate... how embarassing! So, umm, anyways, please don't hesitate to come talk to me, because I want to talk to you. I will tell you this much in advance: not everyone in Ohio goes cow-tipping, ok? Sheesh! (But I do!) Looking forward to meeting all of you!

Hi! My name is David Berman, and I'm a welcome week leader! I'm also the outreach chair for the Hillel Board, so if there are any questions you have about the Bronfman Center, so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me. I'm a junior (but maybe a senior) in CAS studying economics as well as premedical science. I'm also an avid jazz guitarist and composer, so if you've got any questions about how to get involved in the Bronfman Center (or anything else for that matter) please do not hesitate to contact me at DavidBerman@nyu.edu. I'm active in several Bronfman center clubs, including (in alphabetical order) Aepi, Ani V'ata (groupie), Hillel, Kesher, Koach and Shalhevet. I look forward to meeting all the new students and welcoming everyone into our amazing community.
