UPDATE: NYU/ITS System Restoration Underway

(Updated: 8/28 at 5:32 PM)

ITS is pleased to announce that we are now beginning to restore the key University systems that were brought down Saturday to protect against potential data loss.

We expect to publish the schedule of availability of those systems on the ITS Status page ( at approximately 9:00pm EDT. We aim to have key applications available for use during at least part of the business day Monday in NYU Abu Dhabi, at the NYU global sites in Europe, and in NYC. Successful completion of this process will depend on the continued stability of electrical power in downtown Manhattan.

Thank you for your flexibility and support as we worked to keep NYU's systems safe, and as we restore them to normal.

ALERT: Unscheduled System Outages this Weekend

(Updated: 8/26 at 8:29 PM)

In anticipation of power outages at several of NYU's data centers due to Hurricane Irene, ITS will be preemptively shutting down some systems in order to ensure no loss of data or system damage. Some systems at NYU will be unaffected, as they receive alternate power from the NYU cogeneration plant.

Many NYU systems are expected to remain available through the weekend. These include:
- Blackboard
- Files 2.0
- NYUHome
- NYU E-mail and Calendar, powered by Google
- NYU Wikis
- Telephones (VOIP phones will not be available if a power outage occurs)
- Webspace

ITS Academic Technology Centers and CoLabs will be closed for the weekend, but are expected to open on Monday morning, August 29. The IT Service Desk (8-3333; will be available throughout the weekend.

1. Systems shutting down now:
- All QA, Test, and Dev systems

2. Systems shutting down on SATURDAY, AUGUST 27 at 10AM EDT
- All ITS-managed departmental systems in the South Data Center
- Windows File Share
- Novell File Service
- All administrative systems except those below (in 3)
- HPC systems in South Data Center
- Lyris lists
- Luna
- Digital Library systems
- Spatial Data Repository
- Faculty Data Archive

3. Systems shutting down on SATURDAY, AUGUST 27 at 2PM EDT
- Advance Fundraising
- Payment Gateway
- SIS, Albert
- NYU Traveler

4. Systems shutting down on SATURDAY, AUGUST 27 at 3PM EDT
- University Data Warehouse
- Mediease
- Remedy

ITS has been in touch with the business owners associated with these systems and they are completing their scheduled work on the systems before these shutdown times.

We are hoping that all systems will be up and available for the start of business on Monday, August 29 but this depends entirely on staff and power availability, and damage from the storm.

Due to high winds, we may lose NYU-NET network connectivity to the following buildings, which are connected via microwave:
- 80 Lafayette Residence Hall
- 250 Park Avenue South
- 400 Broome Street Residence Hall
- Grammercy Green Residence Hall

It is our expectation that the rest of NYU-NET will remain available. NYU is served by four different Internet Service Providers (ISPs). If their facilities are damaged or their networks are overburdened, network traffic on- and off-campus could be compromised.

ITS will post updates and system availability information to the ITS Status Page as needed (
