
Women's Cross Country Places 17th at NYU Invitational

The New York University women’s cross country team put up a valiant effort at the NYU Invitational on Sept. 15 at its home course in Van Cortlandt Park. Dealing with inclement weather, the team captured 17th place in the 6K NCAA Regional Preview with a total of 464 points.
Geneseo State University won the race with a total of 39 points, followed by Dickinson College (80 points) and Johns Hopkins University (105 points).
Senior co-captain Natalie Wilson led the pack for the Violets, taking 104th place with a time of 25:33.3.
“I felt we had a good second race of the season,” said head coach Jef Smith. “Natalie likes the longer distances and ran a great race. Overall, I am pleased with how we did and look forward to running here again in November.”
Not far off Wilson’s pace was freshman Emily Olsen who took 120th place with a time of 25:52.7. Rounding out the top times for the Violets were was senior Jane Wolkowicz (124th; 26:00.0), freshman Katherine Wang (153rd; 26:55.1), and junior Daniella Orton (159th; 27:05.9).
The sixth and seventh place runners for the Violets were freshman Natalie Helpern (174th; 27:25.1) and junior Megan Buckley (184th; 27:45.9), respectively.
“I feel everyone did really well in the race today,” Wolkowicz said. “It felt good to be out here previewing the course for regionals in November. I felt good about how I ran today and expect that my overall times will get better as the season progresses.”
Dickinson’s Caitlin Bradley won the race in a time of 21:30.4.
Overall, 24 teams and 257 runners competed.
The Violets return to action on Oct. 6 at 11:00am at the Westfield State College Invitational in Westfield, Massachusetts.
