03/07/08

New York University seniors Stephen Hult and Takafumi Hashimoto advanced to the championship semifinals and secured All-America honors with quarterfinal victories at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Friday, March 7, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Hult, seeded #4 at 141 pounds, defeated David Manoogian of University Athletic Association rival Case Western Reserve University 7-4 in the quarterfinals.

Hashimoto, seeded #6 at 157 pounds, came from behind to post a 6-4 sudden-victory win over #3 seed Kyle Katz of Elmhurst College.

The victories clinched All-America honors for both NYU wrestlers, who are now guaranteed to place among the top-eight finishers in their respective weight classes.

Hult, now 30-5 this season, posted a 5-0 victory over Luke Baum of the Rochester Institute of Technology in the opening round. Hashimoto, now 27-3 this season, defeated Beau Hanson of defending champion Augsburg College 9-4 in his opening bout.

Both wrestlers will be earning All-America honors for the first time, and both will face outstanding opponents in the semifinals on Saturday. Hult will match-up against top-seeded Michael Bonora of Rhode Island College, while Hashimoto will take on #2 seed Jason Brew of Olivet College in their respective semifinal bouts.

"Having two wrestlers make it to the national semifinals is very exciting," said NYU head coach Bruce Haberli. "This is the first time that's happened since I've been at NYU."

Senior co-captain Nick Coleman, NYU's 2007 All-American, was eliminated from the competition after suffering two loses on Friday.

In his opening bout, Coleman fell to Ben Adams of John Carroll University 10-6. Then, in the consolation bracket, Coleman was defeated 9-4 by Bryan Lenhardt of Johnson & Wales University.

Coleman finished the 2007-08 season with a team-high 32 wins (32-7), and concluded his brilliant career with an overall mark of 89-31.

As a team, NYU is in 12th place 17 points.

Wartburg College leads the 60-team competition with 77.5 points, followed by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (55.5) and Augsburg (45).

"When you get to this level, you're talking about very, very good wrestlers," said NYU head coach Bruce Haberli. "Having two All-Americans and three qualifiers is an outstanding achievement and says a lot about the growth of our program."
