Three NYU Senior Wrestlers Win Individual Titles at Metropolitan Championships

Three New York University senior wrestlers won individual titles at the 2008 Metropolitan Championships, held at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA, on Sunday, February 24. Not since the 1972 season has NYU had three individual Met champions in the same year.

Stephen Hult (141), captain Takafumi Hashimoto (157) and captain Nick Coleman (184) each qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championships, which will be held in Cedar Rapids, IA, on March 7-8.

As a team, NYU finished second with 82.0 points, finishing behind only The College of New Jersey (90.5 points). The second-place performance was the highest in the 13-year NYU career of head coach Bruce Haberli, who was named Metropolitan Coach of the Year.

Hult, the 141-pound bracket's #1 seed, defeated #3 seed Ryan Catton of York College 5-2 in the finals after defeating Tony Miele of King's College 4-2 in the semis.

Hashimoto, also seeded #1, decisioned #2 seed John Niedrich of York 7-3 in the 157-pound final after defeating Dan Dicolo of TCNJ 3-2.

Coleman, also a #1 seed, won a majority decision over #3 seed Peter Madden of Hunter 15-2 after pinning William Meaney of Elizabethtown in 2:48 in the semis.

Freshman Matt Magill, #4 seed in his 149-pound bracket, upset top-seeded Richard Croswell of Elizabethtown College 5-2 in the semifinals and faced #3 seed John Barnett of TCNJ in the championship final, narrowly losing 5-3.

Sophomore Kyle Christensen (125 pounds) and junior Naum Shuminov (174) each won quarterfinal matches before being eliminated in the semifinal round.
