The New York University Men’s Wrestling Team has taken over the 14th spot in this week’s Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, which is the team’s highest ranking ever.

The team was ranked 15th last week, but moved up after winning the University Athletic Association Wrestling Championship on Saturday, February 9.

The wrestlers achieved a 44-6 win over Case Western Reserve University in their first match-up and a 22-12 win over the University of Chicago in the second. It was the fourth UAA Championship captured by NYU, as the team improved to a 14-1 dual-meet record this season.

The wrestling team also boasts three players ranked among the top-10 in their respective weight classes, all three of whom were named to the 2008 All Association Wrestling Team at the UAA Championships.

Senior Steve Hult is ranked fourth in his weight class after winning both of his bouts this weekend at 141 pounds. He recorded one of three NYU falls in his first bout, and finished the day with a 14-2 decision victory. Hult’s overall record improved to 24-5, and he moved up one place from his fifth-place ranking last week.

Senior captain Takafumi Hashimoto is ranked seventh in the 157-pound weight class, after also chalking up two wins this weekend. Hashimoto won his first bout in an 8-2 decision, and his second in a 5-3 decision. He moved up from a 10th-place ranking last week.

Fellow senior captain Nick Coleman is ranked seventh in his weight class after also winning both of his bouts last weekend at 184 pounds. Coleman recorded the second of NYU’s three falls in his first match-up, and posted the championship-clinching win with a 6-0 shutout against Chicago. Coleman moved up from a ninth-place ranking last week, and his overall record improved to 27-5.
