
Hult Finishes Second; Three Others Place at NYS Wrestling Championships

New York University senior Stephen Hult finished in second place in the 141-pound weight class, and three other NYU wrestlers also earned All-State honors at the 39th Annual New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships in Buffalo, NY.
The competition was held on Friday and Saturday, January 18-19, and was hosted by the University of Buffalo.
Hult, the #2 seed in the bracket, won three matches before falling to top-seeded Matt Kyler of the United States Military Academy 11-6 in the final on Saturday afternoon.
In Saturday morning's semifinal, Hult stymied Ithaca College's Willie Horwath, the #3 seed, by a score of 8-2.
On Friday's first day of competition, Hult defeated Corey Hamabate of Cornell University 10-6 and Andre Harrison of Nassau Community College 15-4.
NYU sophomore Kyle Christensen, the #8 seed, finished in fourth place at 125 pounds.
After receiving consecutive medical forfeit wins over Pappy Cabrera of SUNY Cortland and Brandan Kinney of Columbia University on Saturday morning, Christensen fell 3-0 to #4 seed Frank Perrelli of Cornell in the third-place match.
A pair of NYU grapplers finished in sixth place in their respective wright classes.
Junior Joseph Ranzenbach, seeded #4 at 133 pounds, lost to Chad Winowich of Ithaca College 12-6 in the fifth-place match on Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the day, he produced a gutty 9-8 victory over Aljamain Sterling of SUNY Morrisville before falling 11-5 to #3 seed Dave Colagiovanni of SUNY Cortland.
Sophomore Greg Accetta dropped his fifth-place match at 157 to Tyler Sick of SUNY Cortland 7-1. Earlier on Saturday, Accetta lost to #3 seed Matt Dunn of Columbia 11-0 and 5-3 to Tyshaun Patrick of Nassau C.C.
Accetta had pinned Geoff Rosa of Oneonta State University in 4:49 in his quarterfinal bout on Friday,
Overall, NYU produced its highest team finish ever, accumulating 58.5 points while taking seventh place in the 18-team competition.
"I thought we did very well considering we were without two of our starters," said NYU head coach Bruce Haberli, referring to senior tri-captain Takafumi Hashimoto and junior Patrick Knight. "And, while we didn't wrestle as well as we have in the recent past, we still finished ahead of several teams that are above us in the national rankings."
NYU, currently ranked #26 in the most recent Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Poll, finished ahead of #18 SUNY Brockport (12th place), #22 Ithaca (8th place)and #24 Oneonta State (9th place).
"I think we've put ourselves into a good position heading into the final month of the season," Haberli said.
