#27 Wrestlers Return to Mat, Defeat #24 Centenary

01/05/08

In their first dual match since December 8, the #27-ranked (Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Poll) New York University wrestling team defeated #24-ranked Centenary College 29-9 on Saturday afternoon at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

NYU's grapplers won eight of the 10 bouts to improve its 2007-08 dual-match record to 4-1, while Centenary dropped to 4-3.

NYU recorded one fall, as freshman Matt Magill pinned the Cyclones' David Alsieux in 2:30 in a 149-pound bout.

NYU sophomore Kyle Christensen (125 pounds) recorded a major decision over Centenary's Dustin Overs (13-1), while NYU senior Stephen Hult posted a major decision over Jonathan Stillo (9-0).

"It was a pretty tough match and a good win against a team ranked above us," said NYU head coach Bruce Haberli. "While some of our guys didn't wrestle as well as they can, others really stepped it up. I thought a couple of our guys looked a bit tired out there. Some haven't competed for a while. Maybe we just needed to get the rust out a bit."

NYU returns to action this Wednesday, January 9, with competition against Muhlenberg College and Elizabethtown College beginning at 2pm in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.
