Wrestlers Defeat Rival Hunter, 33-9
12/07/07
The New York University wrestling team defeated its uptown rival, Hunter College, 33-9 on Friday afternoon at the Hunter College Sportsplex in Manhattan.
NYU, now 2-1 in dual matches this season, won seven of the 10 bouts to snare the victory
Although NYU's grapplers did not record any falls, junior Joseph Ranzenbach (133), senior Stephen Hult (141), and senior captain Takafumi Hashimoto (157) did post major decisions, while senior James Layman (HWT) and freshman John Dack (149) pulled off overtime wins.
"We wrestled tough today," said NYU head coach Bruce Haberli. "It was a good match with a lot of close decisions. Hunter is always well-coached and well-prepared."
Hunter (0-2) is coached by Bob Gaudenzi, now in his 28th season. For three of those years, he was the coach and mentor for Haberli, who was a former team captain and NCAA qualifier for the Hawks.
"I hate to lose to Bruce," Gaudenzi admiited after the match. "But, his team really wrestled well and earned the win."
Haberli's squad will have little time to enjoy the victory, as they return to the mat tomorrow to face Bridgewater State College in Danbury, Connecticut, starting at 2pm.
